Was Lent ever completely meatless, or did it always start with just Fridays?

I’d say completely meatless based on the Catholic tradition of Carnival, the party which takes place before lent and the etymology of which is carne vale, which means “farewell to meat” in Latin, signifying that those were the last days when one could eat meat before the fasting of Lent.

Great Lent is still completely meatless (also no dairy, no fish, no eggs) in the Eastern Catholic Churches, beginning with “Meatfare Sunday”. Except that for the Feast of the Annunciation we must of course celebrate the great incarnation of our Lord God, therefore we can have fish! I’m having a nice piece of salmon! 😃

Enjoy your chicken this Friday. 🙂

“With the voice of the archangel we cry to Thee, O Pure One: Rejoice, O Full of Grace, the Lord is with Thee!”
