This year our parish has a Lenten Advent Wreath, recycling the Advent Wreath that was in use back in December. Same tilted wreath of thorns, same four candles on the wreath (three purple, one pink), and one white candle in the center.

Any one else’s parish doing this?

And shouldn’t there be seven candles, rather than four, to mark the seven Sundays in Lent?

I can’t even imagine the purpose of this. Never heard of such.

I never heard of this and it doesn’t make sense to me.

The whole point of Advent is that we are waiting. Waiting for the birth of Our Lord.

Lent, on the other hand, we are in pilgrimage towards the Cross, and then the Resurrection.

Four candles? So . . . One is lit every ten days? Truly strange. Seems totally out of place and inappropriate.

Whose idea was it to use the Advent wreath for Lent, do you know?

I’ve seen crosses with spots for six candles. (There are only six Sundays in Lent counting Palm Sunday.) But I’ve never seen a round wreath shape used for Lent.

Agree.

The idea of a wreath of thorns for Advent also seems inappropriate … 🤷
The reason behind the thorns on the Advent wreath is to remind us of the Crown of Thorns Jesus will come to wear for our salvation for which he was born.

Nope, never heard of such a thing. Sounds like someone is trying to be a little too creative.

This oddity (for lack of a better term) sounds like something straight out of the 1970s. Anyway, it’s just a curiosity, but whose idea was it?

I don’t know. I emailed our pastor inquiring about the origin of the “custom”, and he answered my email without answering my question.

Edit: I googled “lenten wreath” and got a ton of hits, so apparently it’s not as new as some of us (like me) might think.

I’ve never heard of this or seen one. My parish puts out a giant wooden cross with a crown of thorns around it, along with a purple cloth. This is our reminder that we’re in Lent and awaiting the Easter Triduum.

This is something we did as a family devotion during Lent when the children were little (said children now have children of their own, so it was back in the 1980s). Five purple candles and one pink one. Kids like fire, so it was a good “hook.” I actually still have the cross; believe it was ordered from a catalogue from the Abbey in St. Meinard, Indiana . . .
