So with Lent just around the corner, what corporal mortifications are common with the season?
Does anyone have extensive experience with this that might want to give advice to anyone who might wish to practice mortifications during Lent?
I do not intend to do anything extreme, just denying myself certain pleasures and luxuries, and living simpler lifestyle. I want to over come spiritual and physical weakness so that I may no longer be a slave to my passions but live for Christ.
My intent…“Put to death what is earthly in you: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry”

“If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.”

Pax Vobiscum

In Christ,
Irish

Giving up reading manga for Lent. YES THIS IS A BIG SACRIFICE FOR ME!

And a lot of things are made of potatoes… mashed potatoes, fries, chips, plus I love potatoes, so I think I’ll give that up too.
I know many of my friends are giving up chocolate.

Same here! And I’m going to have to give up Facebook too. 🙂

oh not magna! I never liked it myself but I think most of my friends would die if they went for all of Lent without it! 😃

I couldn’t do without facebook entirely. I might try to cut back on internet in general though. 👍

Goodbye soda, goodbye breakfast meats, and goodbye to Lucky Charms. If I was giving up Rahman noodles, this college student wouldn’t be eating anything…

I know people who would have absolutely no social interaction were it not for facebook.

I’m thinking I’ll give up all carbonated drinks as well.

Hey Jazzy. why do you see “IRISH DUDE” and think of potatoes? 🙂

We Irish actually eat things other than potatoes! 😊

Sometimes we eat corned beef and cabbage!😉

I’m looking at the lack of discipline in my life and am considering the following:

The big ones:
  • no fast food
  • coffee only once a day :bigyikes:
  • exercise at least four times a week
The little ones:
  • kneeling while praying my daily Rosary (I usually pray it in the car, but I’ve begun trying to pray it before bed a few days a week. I don’t think I should kneel while driving 😃 )
  • no snooze button!
I’m still praying about which of these to commit to – 48+ hours to choose.

God bless us in our longing to grow closer to Him.

Gertie

I try to always kneel when praying the rosary. It was hard at first, but now I don’t feel right if I’m not kneeling. Lewis once said that, since we are creatures of matter and Spirit, what we do with our bodies effects what happens to our Spirits.

“Lazy people can always be tricked into thinking that scheduled and liturgical prayers are simply old fashioned and parroted. They can then be tricked into praying seldom, only when they feel like it, usually not assuming any sort of form and trying without success to imitate the prayer life of those far advanced in the service of the Enemy (God)…”

Ah, CS Lewis! I love him. He always states things the way they are. We should perform our spiritual practices when we would least like to do them. That is when we need to do them most.

No, honey, not on Ash Wednesday or any Friday. It was a bit of a joke.🙂
It was a lovely joke!

I’ve never had real Irish corned beef and cabbage. When I was at Gaelic Roots at Boston College years and years ago, though, I remember one of the Irishmen introducing me to milk in my tea. Ick. 😦

Now, back to topic. 😃

Hi Gertie!

Milk in the tea. That is an English tradition. Whiskey in tea, that’s a different story! :o

I thought it was whiskey in the teacup, not necessarily in the tea? 😃 Again, whiskey would definitely be a mortification – can’t stand alcohol!

I know, Gertie, we are trifling over incidentals We need to search our own souls and find out what we need to do to become more Christlike. I know the Church has certain specifications about what we need to do to prepare ourselves for our Lord’s coming. But it is more than giving up certain things. It is taking on certain behaviours or practises that would prepare ourselves to meet Him. I mean, what if you thought you might bump into Him in the tibes,. How would you prepare yourself to meet Him in everyday life? I know that Lent only happens once a year, but should’t we practice these things all year kong?
