Lenten Mortification

I don’t drink caffeine, I drink little alcohol anyway, and unfortunately my job as a college professor requires me to be online. But I’ve decided to give up two of my favorite crutches - chocolate and desserts of all kinds (including muffins, donuts, cookies, etc. as snacks). And I’ve committed to reading the Gospel daily and praying the rosary.

I’ve always found that, like when I want to lose weight, it’s easier to say what I will be doing rather than what I won’t be. Although in this case, I figured losing the sweets would be a good addition to my Lenten observance.

Oh I forgot - I’m reducing our fast food trips to essentials only (I have a 2 & 5 yr old - sometimes when we’re out and it’s noon, McD’s is absolutely essential).

I’m doing a pre-V2 Lenten fast. If I violate it, I could go to a liberal parish for confession.

I’m adopting a raw vegan diet for Lent, and going to the gym 4 times a week, don’t see why mortification and getting in shape can’t happen at the same time.

You can also take the pledge with the Pioneers just for Lent. Offer up all alcohol until Easter for those with addiction problems. I’m still not sure if I’ll do that, have a birthday in Lent, not to mention St Patrick’s Day!

you have to understand that milk in yer tea is MANDATORY!!! 😃
Oh, eww. . . that’s like saying you should put ketchup in your coffee. It just doesn’t go there!!

😉 Seriously though, I think for me, the mortification is withstanding the recent trials with jobs and mental illness in my immediate family, rather than giving something up. For me, it’s probably more about giving IN right now.

My husband and I are fasting from meat everyday except Sundays of Lent. I’ve also decided to give up alcohol on Wednesday and Friday evenings, which is a sacrifice for me since I do enjoy sharing a good martini or manhatan or even a glass of Kosher red wine with my hubby in the evenings while we relax. I told him we could use the money we save from not eating meat or me drinking on those two nights to give to the Church.

On the more spiritual side of things, though, I’m working my hardest to keep my patience. I have such a hot temper and, lately, I’ve become a slave to it once again. We’re also going to attend weeknight Mass on Fridays. Before we were married we used to be able to go everyday, but, unfortunately, circumstances don’t allow that to happen now, so we’re trying our best.

God bless.

Oh yeah, and instead of wasting my afternoons watching mysteries like Murder she Wrote or Colombo while nursing my son, I plan to watch something spiritually fulfilling from EWTN! As a family, we’re also going to watch more spiritual movies like those on the Saints.

Good for you! Last night, it was Choral Treasure online radio for me. I hope you continue watching those spiritually fulfilling shows and movies. 😃
