It came earlier than usual (indeed, one day off from the earliest it could possibly be), but the Lenten season of preparation for Good Friday and Easter is upon us.
Presently, we are in the “mini-season” of Septua/Sexa/Quintagesima (today, as I write this, was Sexagesima Sunday). This period is not part of Lent, but was designed as a time to gather oneself and prepare for Lent. We are reminded of this by the purple vestments, the omission of the Gloria, and the somber tone of the Epistle and Gospel readings.
The devil loves for us to make grand plans and resolutions only to give up prematurely out of despair. So consider this time as a “warm-up session” to plan what you’re going to do during Lent and to try out a few things before it officially starts on Ash Wednesday (February 6). That way, you’ll be primed to go and in the right mindset to take it seriously from day one.
