i read somewhere, (maybe at newadvent ??) that during lent every day the sorrowful mysteries are used.
is that the common practice?

I don’t know about the other days of the week, but Sundays would still be the Glorious Mystries. Actually you can pray any mystery any day of the week. It’s really your choice. There are no rules, only suggestions.

Last year I prayed every decade except the Glorious. It seemed fitting to focus on what it would feel like if Jesus had not conquered death for us. Ask our Lady to guide you in this matter. There are no rules, as was pointed out. The purpose of the Rosary is to enter into the mysteries with the help of Mary, and to become closer to Jesus through her. No matter what decade you may pray, to pray is the key. I have only been Catholic since 2004, and I am constantly challenged in my prayer life. God knows what is best for you, and asking Mary to help you by leading you to Jesus is the surest way to uncovering the heart of God. 👍

Well, I do the usual weekly rotation during the week.

Mon-Joyful
Tues-Sorrowful
Wed-Glorious
Thurs-Luminous
Fri-Sorrowful

And the weekends rotate according to time of year.

1st Week Advent-Ash Wednesday - Sat/Sun -Joyful
Ash Wednesday-Palm Sunday Sat/Sun - Sorrowful
Easter-1st Week Advent - Sat/Sun Glorious

the traditional days all thru the year are joyous on Monday and Thursday, Sorrowful on Tuesday and Friday, Glorious on Wed. and Sat. During Advent, Joyful on Sunday, During Lent, Sorrowful on Sunday, During Eastertide and the rest of the year, Glorious on Sunday. With the introduction of the Luminous mysteries, saying them on Thursday has been one common suggestion.

Common enough, but certainly not mandatory. And I often do the Franciscan Crown no matter what the day of the week or the season. And if you wish to concentrate on the sorrow of Mary, you could recite the Servite Rosary.

in personal devotion, pray whatever mysteries you want, or the other uses of the rosary devotion as suggested.
in public recitations of the rosary, the traditional mysteries should be recited to avoid confusion and aid communal prayer.

So true, and thanks for pointing it out. When the Church gathers communally for prayer, especially at the Mass, we are to model the Oneness Jesus desires for us as the Body of Christ. 👍
