Hi,

What exactly do the lesser Oriental Churches such as the Coptics, and lesser Eastern Churches such as the Assyrians, believe about the following:

Filioque
Original Sin
Immaculate Conception
Purgatory
Hell

Ancestral Sin
Toll Houses
Uncreated Light

Are they more in agreement with the Catholic Church, or the Eastern Orthodox Churches?

Thanks in advance and God bless.

There are Eastern/Oriental Churches in the Catholic Communion.

Regarding:

Filioque - Not traditionally used, but not heretical (some OO would say heretical)

Original Sin - Somewhere between Eastern Orthodox and Roman beliefs

Immaculate Conception - Most do not call it this, but depends on the specific Church. Ethiopians seem to publicly celebrate it Liturgically, Syriacs sort of do, its on some calendars; Copts do not; Armenians sort of do; Malankara sort of do but it’s a quasi-public-private devotion.

Purgatory - Latin scholasticism rejected, but prayers for the dead and intercession are believed and practiced

Hell - similar

Ancestral Sin - privately held

Toll Houses - no

Uncreated Light - not rejected but not common; are seeing it more commonly with joint EO/OO dialogue and theologians studying it each others schools.

Alright, I would also like to know what the lesser Eastern, otherwise referred to as the Nestorian Churches believe about the things mentioned.

I will add some more:

Indefectability of the Church
Unleavened Bread for Eucharist
Divine Essence-Energies distinction

Nestorian and Lesser Eastern are different. The “lesser Eastern” are Oriental Orthodox. The other are Assyrian Church of the East, Chaldean Catholic and Syro-Malabsr Catholic.

The Indefectibility of the Church is agreed by all
Unleavened bread doesn’t come into play. All these Churches use leavened bread traditionally, except Armenians and SyroMalabars. The others may use it out of convenience or necessity.
Divine energy is more an EO/ByzCath concept, like Divine Light. Its getting some voice among OO/OrientalCatholics but still preliminary not to the depth of EO/ByzCath

The Catholic Doctrine of Indefectability includes the Apostolic See. Not sure why I asked about this one to be honest, I guess I had a brain fart moment.

I’ll bet this has been covered a ton on Orthodox websites, except maybe the Assyrian question.

I started this same thread on the Orthodox Christian forums, and they’re apparently offended that I used the word ‘lesser’.

That term was common 50-60yrs ago, these days academia tends to use the Oriental Orthodox or preChalcedonian moniker
