I have been asked to teach a lesson on chastity to a group of about 15 Mormon High Priests - (40 to 60year old men).

Can you give me any assistance in what I should teach? Any good talks or books that you know of? I want to include abortion and pornography. Any ideas welcome.

God bless,

Hal.

How about this?

Follow the guidelines given by the Mormon Church on this matter. It is not negotiable at the moment. We gave up on expecting the government to be okay with polygamy, but that is the last concession we will openly make, be certain of that.

Is that too harsh? Or should it be more flowery filled with a bunch of nonsense that sounds good and flowery but boils down to the same thing? Is this free or are you designing this to be a pay for event?

Simply tell them that after the age of 40, there is a significantly greater chance of dying of a heart attack while having sex.

Totally free. I do not believe in their unique doctrines, but I love the Mormon people. This will be one Christian to another. There will be no proselyting except for Christ. No hidden agendas.

If this is an interfaith dialog, I’m sure you have cleared this with your Bishop. Have fun and make friends. They are nice people.

I’m just curious. How did this talk come about and why would would a group of high ranking Mormons who are NOT Christians be open to a talk from a Christian?

OK, as long as you realize that, officially speaking, Mormonism is “unique” enough that neither Salt Lake nor Rome would consider Mormon-Catholic dialogue to be “one Christian to another”, strictly speaking. IOW, while the Church recognizes the validity of the baptisms of many Christian denominations, the Mormons don’t recognize Catholic baptisms as valid, nor does the Church recognize Mormon baptism. Unlike a Lutheran or a Baptist, a Mormon joining the Catholic Church would have to be baptised.

To your question: Are you supposed to be teaching chastity so that they can use your reflections directly themselves (narrow focus), so that they can turn around and teach it to younger men (broader focus), so that they can turn around and teach it to an entire Mormon stake (broader focus yet), or so that they gain some insights into how Catholics understand sexual morality (outside focus)? That’s the first question to answer. For instance, they might find an explanation of celibacy to either be exactly what they want to hear or a completely irrelevant waste of their time. Answer that question, then decide on topics.

I’m also concerned that you make it clear you are not representing Rome or your diocese…because if you were, you’d have someone far more qualified to go to with this question instead of us. Make it abundantly clear that although your viewpoint is the viewpoint of a Catholic layperson who strives to live according to the teachings of the Church, these are your reflections based on your own understanding of the topic, and by no means a definitive statement of what the Catholic Church teaches.

PS I think you will find that most Christian denominations in the US have relations with Salt Lake City that are similar to those that Rome does. I don’t know of a mainline denomination that accepts Mormon baptism as Christian, and the Mormons certainly don’t recognize the baptisms of anyone else.

My apologies everyone, I should have clarified from the outset - my error.

I am officially mormon and have been so for many years. I still attend the mormon church with my wife - who is true blue mormon. However, I do not believe in the mormon church’s doctrines, but still attend.

“Spiritual leanings” towards Catholicism would be too mild. I suppose you could use the New Testament term “God fearer” for me in regards to Catholicism: I believe in the doctrines of the Catholic church, but have not made that final step. It is complex, believe me very complex - or perhaps I am just a wimp.

Anyway, so I have been asked by those in the mormon church who want to strengthen me back into full belief, to teach this lesson. I also want to serve my brothers and sisters. I just want to serve them, but within the rules of “their” church without proselyting. I know some might disagree with my approach, and disagree with me calling them Christian. I think many LDS are genuine and strive to be “Christians” but are mislead.

Chastity (the topic assigned to me) seems like a subject that we can all benefit from as we seek Christ. In my mind there’s no “Jew and Gentile” here, no “us and them”, just people, children of God seeking to know Him better.

Anyway, that’s the background. Apologies for inadvertently misleading anyone.

Any views on content or resources that I could use?

God bless,

Hal.
