…Our King is coming in his great glory:
Let us light our lamps and go out to meet him (Mt 25,6);
Let us be glad in him as he has been glad in us
And gives us gladness with his glorious light.

My friends, arise! make yourselves ready
To give thanks to our Savior King,
Who will come in his glory and make us joyful
With his joyous light in the Kingdom.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The lines above are from St. Ephrem (given as Commentary for today’s Mass Readings). During this Octave of the Epiphany, it is good to remain just a bit longer beside “the Child and His Mother”. As we heard in yesterday’s Feast, the Magi found the newborn King as they entered the house and saw Him with Mary, His Mother.

During the season of Advent and Christmas, we have seen the Light shining through Mary as she held Jesus within her womb and saw her reflect His Light as He was born into this world. She continues to shine with His Light for all the world as the Star of the New Evangelization. The Magi having seen the Child with His Mother were illumined by His Light and returned home a “different way”.

May we gaze upon this Mother and Child, bathed in Light as Joseph, the Shepherds, and the Magi saw them. We have been given His Light in Baptism and continue to be illuminated by His Word and Sacraments in order to let His Light shine through us. We journey to our Eternal Home “differently” once we have encountered Christ through Mary.

Today we await His Second Coming spoken of by St. Ephrem. Preaching to the Church in the 300’s, the saint encourages his hearers: “My friends, arise!” Let us, in our time of 2015, arise and light our lamps to meet the Bridegroom of the Church! Come Lord Jesus!
