Let's get a clear answer: is it wrong to watch Angels and Demons?

It would be like St. Peter going to Rome and then spending his time there watching the gladiators in the Colliseum, or watching plays designed to mock the faith. The whole premise of this movie, the Illuminati and their persecution by the Church, is a lie. It never happened. I don’t think it would be wrong to watch the movie so we can discuss it with people - but I’d hate to be giving money to the people producing this garbage.

Funny how they don’t make movies slandering other religions like Islam or Hinduism - that would be politically incorrect. But it’s perfectly acceptable to make movies that are complete lies about Catholicism.
I wrote this piece and posted it in public places at the time when the Da Vinci craze was at its height. With similar kind of movies in Hollywood’s pipeline, I hope this would not be out of sync:
WHAT IS THE SENSIBLE ATTITUDE OF A CHRISTIAN
TOWARDS THE DA VINCI CODE?

Many things have been said and written about the Da Vinci Code. While almost all agree that it is a work of fiction, nobody disputes that it is superbly crafted. The more we hear the pros and cons of it in media, the greater is our eagerness to see the movie or read the book if we have not yet done so.

This preoccupation leads us to forget to ask the most important question as a Christian: What is the best decision as far as seeing the movie or reading the book is concerned?

Consider the following:
  1. By portraying Jesus as being married to Mary Magdalene, the novel denies the events of the Crucifixion, the Resurrection and, by implication, all the central tenets of Christianity re-volving around those events. Remember that although the story is fictional, the author claims that the historical portrayal about Jesus is authentic. In other words, the story claims that Christianity is not only a hoax but the biggest hoax in history. So stupendous is the hoax that the perpetrators of the conspiracy, which is continuing until our time, are willing to commit murders in order to cover it up.
  2. The story therefore is a grievous attack on our Christian religion.
  3. If you really believe in the divinity of Christ, then the book/movie makes a blasphemous claim about our savior.
  4. Had a similar movie been made against Islam, even with half as malicious a claim, we will surely have a war in our hand. This is not to advocate such a response –only to point out how the Muslims’ heart is more consistent than that of many of us Christians.
  5. If somebody makes a false accusation against a friend, the sensible response is indignation (and not pleasure) and, if possible, an effort to defend that friend.
  6. What kind of a friend of Jesus are we, when we pay just to see him being maliciously in-sulted while we sit comfortably, munching pop corn?
  7. If we see this kind of movie, we are rewarding the author and all those that make the movie possible. Therefore we are encouraging them to make another such project.
  8. Somebody said that if one losses his/her faith on the basis of a movie, maybe he did not have the faith worth saving in the first place. But I say, if one who claims to have strong faith sees the movie for no other reason than to enjoy it, then he/she may not have the faith after all.
In the gospel of St. Matthew, Jesus is quoted to have said that when He comes back to earth, he will separate the sheep from the goats. Theologians tell us that those who took the side of the goats did not have to be forced to go there. They just decide to be there. Small events like this, where we are to make a decision, can be considered as a “rehearsal” for that big event. Are we going to say YES to the movie and be a goat or are we going to say NO and be a sheep? And, to continue the analogy, in this case, Jesus would say to the goats, “and when, not just my little ones, but I, personally were insulted, you, not only did not defend me, but took pleasure in the spectacle instead!”

I find that the deeper I go in my quest to love Christ more, the less the things like garbage from hollywood entice me.

Fill your time with things that reflect your faith.

Father Corapi is on EWTN right now.

Yup! It’s called having a fully functioning conscience. I have observed that many self proclaimed “good” Catholics think nothing of watching anything hollywood dumps in front of them, then walk away saying that it doesn’t affect them. The fact that they are spending time and money on watching these movies is proof that it is in fact affecting them. Their consciences are already so dulled that they can no longer see just how offensive it is to God to fill their minds with such trash and support an industry that is openly and obviously opposed to God’s will.

Has the Church officially banned us from watching it?

No. If the Church had, that item would be all over the news. It’s not.

As post 2 points out, this is fiction
OK ? That means it’s a story about things that are not real. If it were a story about gay vampires crucifying a virgin in honour of satan, that* would* be problematic. It’s unlikely that anyone on these fora will want to watch a film now showing in the UK called “Lesbian Vampire Killers” - but “Angels and Demons”, even if it is a bit daft, sounds much tamer than that: if it offends, it’s not likely to be offensive for the same reasons.

The Fathers were in two minds as to the reading of the Greek & Latin Classics. Yet these have been school texts for centuries. And yet they are full of idolatry & obscenity. Anyone who has not been corrupted by Homer, Lucretius, Catullus or Cicero is unlikely to take any harm from Dan Brown. Catullus writes heaps of poems to his mistress: is having a mistress morally good ? Of course not. If small boys can be exposed to this kind stuff year after year as part of their education, a mere film seen by adults is unlikely to do any harm.

Ridiculous thought isn’t it!

I can’t picture St. Peter watching the gladiators or plays designed to mock the faith so he could discuss them with people either. I think he would know it was a waste of time to discuss and debate with people who veiw such things. People who are open to truth and goodness seek it out. Those who aren’t open, won’t be changed by someone joining them in viewing it and then debating with them.
but I’d hate to be giving money to the people producing this garbage.
Amen!

Interesting isn’t it!

Partly because it’s unworkable. Imagine the scale of the operation involved. The Church would have to have a huge operation to review all films coming out. The worst of them would never be seen so you could have hard core porn with no condemnation by the Church while Harry Potter gets a ban because the official doesn’t like that sort of thing.

We have principles of morality and after that we have to use our judgment and discretion. Will there be people who think Angels and Demons is true? Of course, but I know Catholics who think the atom bomb was dropped on Nagasaki by US Protestants who wanted to destroy the Catholic Church in Japan!

You can’t be serious  At least, I hope you aren’t…

Of course not.

But that doesn’t make seeing it a good idea.

In my own personal opinion, a catholic seeing a Dan Brown movie involving the Church is like (though to a lesser magnitude) being Jewish and buying a copy of Mein Kampf. Self destructive.
Well, to tell the truth, I have read all of Dan Brown’s books and have seen the movie The Da Vinci code. If I didn’t believe the Holy Spirit protects the Church from error, I would probably find myself at least questioning if the “Code” and “Angels and Demons” had any truth to them. Although I read Brown’s books as thriller dillers, they could cause one some very troubled thoughts.

I saw the movie “The Da Vinci Code”. It was abominable, not only for its caricature of the Church, but also for the cinema photograpy and clarity of plot. If you hadn’t read the book, the movie wouldn’t have made much sense. As it was, I had read it and still made little sense of the movie. I don’t plan on seeing Angels and Demons. A waste of time better spent reading about The Church Fathers, or one of our German Shepherd’s books… My advice, don’t bother with Brown.

excuse you!!
who said that it’s not allowed??
just watch and learn…
it would be on showing tomorrow already…
okay??

Is it wrong to watch it.

YES.

Has the Church banned it:

NO… the Church expects that her followers love Christ and do not find that sort of “entertainment” appealing, I suppose.

My guess is Ron Howard is trying to create a stir by saying how the Vatican is such a bunch of meanies, so this flick gets noticed

The review I read about it was awful… He is probably thanking his lucky stars he can play the victim card ,in hopes that it will bring people into the theater:o

Well said! 👍

The church is saying it is OK to see it…That must be a big disappointment for Ron

Is it wrong to watch Angels and Demons?

Well, would you pay to see a movie that ridiculed and insulted your mother and father?

:onpatrol:We don’t need the thought police telling us what to use for entertainment. However, we do need guidance in our moral lives. “Is a fish more free in the water or out of it” Of course, a fish is more free in its natural environment. Holiness is our natural environment. Jesus calls all of us to be holy. If seeing this movie will lead you to holiness, then yes go see it. If the movie is polluted and will push you towards a disposition to sin, then no-- do not see it. :hammering: Keep hammering away at this simple question. Anthony

So, how does the Church guide you without becoming the “thought police”?

The Church can help guide a person’s conscience in determining if something is morally objectionable or potentially damaging to one’s faith. On the other hand the “thought police” would have never let Angels and Demons been made let alone perhaps ever been written. There is no comparison.

The Church can help guide a person’s conscience in determining if something is morally objectionable or potentially damaging to one’s faith.
The Church use to do this through the Catholic League of Decency, but it was caught in a conundrum. On the one hand, Catholics !!!] said they wanted to make their own “informed” decisions on what to see, but on the other, complained when provided that information, calling the League “thought police” and/or accused it of “censorship”.

So you see the term “thought police”, “censorship”, etc. are loaded ones that mean many things to many people.

Basically, anything has become “thought control” or “censorship” that interferes with a movie-maker’s ability to fleece the people out of a buck … or a movie-goer’s desire to see a dirty movie.
😃

I think it is fine to have guidelines evaluating stuff…Parents need to know what is safe for kids

I want to know where I can spend my money in ways that will not hurt our Holy Mother Church, and I don’t want to support filth and terrible acts of violence with my money

I say go ahead and watch it.
But, then, you must rush right out and get the Da Vinci Hoax.
Cuz truth is always more entertaining than fiction.😃
