My dear friends in Christ;

Let’s have a discussion on the topic of “Right Understanding”…

For example:

Are we as individuals permitted to hold our own views on any given topic?

Is truth singular to a particular to a topic or can there be be mutiple truths on the same issue?

What is your source of truth?

Is there such a thing “as truth”? How can find be sure that they have found it?

Is truth even revelent today?

Are you of the mind that the search for “truth” is written on our subconscience wills?

Is discovering truth in an absolute sense necessary for one to have inner peace; inner happiness?

So share your views on this issue in charity; and provide SUPPORT for your position. Ones personal opinion ALONE seems to me to be inadaquate evidence of valid thought.

God Bless,
Pat

I’m required to develop a right conscience. Which unfortunately (and yet thankfully) isn’t based on my hedonistic selfish desires, wants, and needs.

I’m not right. But, there is Someone who was, who is, and who will always be Truth and Light for the world.

Either I’m obedient of heart mind and soul or I’m not. I can at the least tell that.

Well, keep in mind that truth isn’t an opinion or an abstract. It is a Person, Jesus Christ. He said, “I am the way, the TRUTH, and the life.”

As Catholics, there are many things of which we may hold our own personal “opinion.” But when it comes to the clear teachings of the Church, we are to give 100% religious assent to each and every teaching of the Church. Rebelling and rejecting any teaching(s) puts us outside the Body of Christ. It makes us heretics, and we are automatically excommunicated “latae sententiae,” by the fact of the deed (of rejection). We are to hold to what we have been given, which is the fullness of Christ’s teachings, handed on to the Apostles, who handed it on to their successors, the bishops, down through the centuries. We do not claim, nor do we have the right, to change any of these teachings. And, we have the obligation to teach the fullness of these teachings, as best we can. 🙂

Hmm…

You ask this, seemingly in good faith, in your first question:

Are we as individuals permitted to hold our own views on any given topic?

Yet you reveal your disregard for individual views in your final statement:

Ones personal opinion ALONE seems to me to be inadaquate evidence of valid thought.

Do you want individual views or not?
Indeed, you post questions which can only elicit personal responses. I mean, if you can get a bunch of people to state definitively and objectively, with proof, the nature of truth, then I think the argument or discussion is over. Until then, you might have to do with personal opinions.

Question 2: Yes, there can be multiple truths on the same issue.
Question 3: My rationality, the Bible and those around me whose opinions I respect.
Question 4: (see, here’s one of those questions whose answer is suggested by the other questions). Anyway, yes there is truth. I can’t be sure if I’ve found it. I know what I know. Perhaps that is my truth.
Question 5: If people seek truth and claim to have found it, then, yes, it is relevant.
Question 6: No. Not in those words, anyway.
Question 7: I don’t see how discovering truth in one’s own mind is any different from “discovering truth in an absolute sense”. Correct me if I’m wrong, but you seem to be proposing a philosophical argument here without defining your terms: “truth in an absolute sense”, “inner peace”, “inner happiness” and whether one thing is “necessary” for another.

Indeed I do. And I agree that I DO have a personal opinion on these matters.
Indeed, you post questions which can only elicit personal responses. I mean, if you can get a bunch of people to state definitively and objectively, with proof, the nature of truth, then I think the argument or discussion is over. Until then, you might have to do with personal opinions.
Your point correctly points out one of my personal beliefs that truth objectively can only be singular to any single issue. Yet expereince tells me this seems to not be a common position and I’m trying to Objectively understand why? How this can be possible?
Question 2: Yes, there can be multiple truths on the same issue.
For the sake of discussion lets have an example of a truth you hold that allows more than One correct understanding.

For example does “One + One” have to equal “Two?”

So do you hold that it is possible to prove a truth? Is it necessary to give proof of one’s beliefs beyond personal acceptable understaning? Is why one can’t be sure they found “it” a Subjective or an Objective conclusion?
Question 5: If people seek truth and claim to have found it, then, yes, it is relevant.
Then if a 'truth" lacks a solid foundation of support evience, is this truth as revelant as one that is unsupported by evidence?
Question 7: I don’t see how discovering truth in one’s own mind is any different from “discovering truth in an absolute sense”. Correct me if I’m wrong, but you seem to be proposing a philosophical argument here without defining your terms: “truth in an absolute sense”, “inner peace”, “inner happiness” and whether one thing is “necessary” for another.
Pope Benedict spoke of truth in his acceptane speech as our Pope. What he shared seems to be to quite logical… “There cannot be [not should not; cannot] your truth and my truth or there would be no trutn.” This has made a profound impression on me.

It seems to me, that one’s persoanl understanding can be influenced by a GREAT many things? Environemnt, Education, effort to discover the truth, a willinness [or lack thereof] to open debte on the issue. While the truth ought to be proveable; or at least give credible evidence of it’s truth?

**Heb.8: 10 **“This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel… after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

THANKS so much for your post!

God Bless,
Pat

I’ve sworn off discussing my partner on Y!A but I’ll mention my grandmother who, since my mother’s passing, in the other woman I love most. She is a wonderful woman who has seen and done so much as an African American woman who went to college when few women (or men) of color did. She’s musically talented but devoted her studies to languages and for many years translated Russian texts and periodicals for the Library of Congress. She also made extra money as a tailor and seamstress, always dressed fabulously in clothes modeled on designs by the likes of Coco Chanel, but she also made men’s suits for friends.
