There are several quotes from the Early Church Fathers that the Catholic Church uses to support its stance that the Catholic Church is the church Jesus founded - stuff on transub and Mary and church authority and all that. If I need to provide direct quotes I can, but you can look them up easily on www.catholic.com and click on the link “Fathers Know Best.”

Now the question is this:

Assuming these early writers were indeed truly Catholic and there are Protestants here that hold that the Catholic church is not the One True Church, could these men really have gone into error so early after Jesus died? I mean some of these quotes are from as early as 100s to 200s A.D.

Please: refrain from debating on if these men were really Catholic or talk about taking things in context or posting things like “catholic” just means “universal.” This question is based on assumption. If you want to talk about other things, please start another thread.

Thanks

This question reminds me of questions that lawyers ask, “could this have happened?” “Is it possible that maybe this is what really happened?”

Well, could it have happened and is it possible? 🤷 I suppose, but is it probable? :nope:

Looking at it from a non-Catholic perspective, reading the Church Father’s writings about the Eucharist and their beliefs on baptism, it would certainly seem not only possible but probable that they fell into error. How else is a non-Catholic Christian supposed to explain these beliefs of theirs?

God bless

Yes it could and it did happen. Read Revelation at the six of the seven churches were already in error at a time before Johns death.

Hi

I am an Ahmadi Muslim. I don’t think that the above statement is correct. Jesus did not found the CatholicProtestantOrthodox etc churches. It is Paul who founded this CrossPhilosophy at Rome in my opinion. This has got nothing to do with Jesus; Paul only used his name as a cover of his CrossPhilosophy.

Thanks

Differing opinions are welcome here

Ah paarsurrey, not seen you in a while, still spreading the theories of Islam I see. However though, this is more a protestant thing, so yea, they don’t believe ‘Paul used his name as a cover of his CrossPhilosophy’ - luckily

I love conspiracy theories. 🙂

Hm…yes…I’d forgotten about that one. I’ll re-read that. Also, I remember that in the epistles, the apostle Paul was already correcting people that had gone a little wacky.

But even given these things, it’s difficult to think that the church had gone so utterly off track in such a short amount of time.

Thanks for the thought. I’ll read that stuff as soon as I have a minute. Crazy schedule nowadays. 😛

Anything could have happened I suppose. I have often thought wondered how authoritative the ECFs are considering that the Church teaches that only the Pope can teach infallibly on behalf of the Church.
