Intentions: For the happiness of my husband and daughter; that God will bless my family with a second child even though it seems so unlikely; and for the salvation of CIR.

6th Hail Mary, 5th Glorious Mystery
 
Thank you for remembering Nicaragua, whose faithful are celebrating a virtual gritería of the Assumption this year. Typically, there is a festival in the city of León in thanksgiving that they were spared from the eruption of a volcano. The faithful everywhere gather around Assumption time, visiting and sharing in Our Lady’s joy, and they have a little cheer or grito that they shout to one another:
  • What causes so much joy?
  • The Assumption of Mary!
This year with the pandemic ravaging the nation and the dictator doing virtually nothing to stop its spread, the faithful are staying home to save their lives. Father Edwing Román–who made international headlines in the Catholic press last fall when Ortega’s police trapped him and the mothers of political prisoners in his rectory for nearly two weeks without food, water, or medicine–explained the gritería this way
It is the greatest cultural and religious symbol that identifies the Nicaraguan Catholic anywhere in the world. This “cry” encompasses faith, conscience, tradition, culture, and patriotism.

  1. The time for the Incarnation is at hand.
  2. Of all women God prepared Mary from her conception to be the Mother of the Incarnate Word.
  3. The Angel Gabriel announces: “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with thee.”
  4. Mary wonders at this salutation.
  5. The Angel assures her: “Fear not . . . you shall conceive in your womb, and give birth to a Son.”
  6. Mary is troubled for she has made a vow of virginity.
  7. The Angel answers that she will conceive by the power of the Holy Spirit, and her Son will be called the Son of God.
  8. The Incarnation awaits Mary’s consent.
  9. Mary answers: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to your word.”
  10. The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.
