I am proposing that Santa exists. He has supernatural powers, his existence has been asserted by the honest testimonial of millions of children, who really believe in his existence. He has been reported by to have been seen and touched by those children; he talked to those children and listened to their requests; he fulfilled their requests even if they did not really deserve it; he has consumed the milk and the cookies under the Christmas tree… in other words there are very convincing pieces of evidence for his existence.

Can you substantiate that Santa is just a figment of my imagination?

But he did exist!!! His real name is St Nicholas of Myra.

The children started as believers and became skeptics as the reached maturity. I’ve yet to meet an adult who believes in Santa.

The apostles began as skeptics (none showed up at the crucifixion, Thomas refused to believe). As they matured, they believed so strongly they went to their death.

I haven’t met a person who is willing to go to his death to testify that he has “seen” Santa once they grow up and begin taking part in the hoax for their own children.

In addition, millions of adults will testify to having eaten the cookies left for Santa. In early writings of skeptics, we can’t find a single person who admits to being part of the “hoax” of Christianity.

I don’t need to prove he’s a figment of your imagination. Unlike what history has provided for the exitence of Christ, your witnesses for Santa have been discredited. The burden of proof is back on you.

I hav a very devout Jewish friend who says, “If believing in Santa get’s me more presents … then I believe!”
 
Hmmmmm? I think I would start by visiting the county jail and see if they are holding anybody with a long beard and red suit for burglary. That would settle it for me.

The adults you speak of are hardly relevant, they already lost their childish innocence (and gullibility) the Bible espouses as a necessary factor for “true” belief. The fact that no santaist has ever been prosecuted for their belief is not a fault of Santa.

You say: hoax? They are unbelievers, why do you accept their testimony? Santa has supernatural powers, he brings the presents, the adults are mistaken due to the cynical adherence to “facts” like credit card slips and store receipts.

How could it? You forget that Santa is magical, and he does not take away “things” from those homes, he brings them.

I am arguing FOR the existence of Santa as a true santaist. Are you an a-santaist? How about all the evidence I gave you? Are they not convincing? How about all the books and movies which show Santa’s activities? Are all those people who created them: liars?
 
He he he … my argument TO YOU is that the only being in your pantheon of imaginary creatures which bothers you enough to argue against their existance, is God. … 🙂
 
I don’t get athiests. Hitetlen, WHY DO YOU CARE what we believe? According to you there is no god, no afterlife, so why do you care? Let us have our little delusion and leave us alone. I realize you don’t believe Jesus ever existed or that if He did He was just a fake. I realize you don’t believe He died for the world or that he rose again. But why do you seem to care so much that we believe those things?

WHY DO YOU CARE???

Hmmm. A straw-man response if I ever saw one, Hitetlen. Honestly, I expected something more clever. The only way you could respond to my post was to take half the content in an isolation from the rest. The point of my post was that you have yet to provide credible evidence for Santa. Rather than come back and provide that, you simply agree with my argument but try to discredit it by discrediting the skeptics. Unfortunately, in Christ’s time, even the skeptics confirmed the historical certainties. Christianity has taken on the burden of proof (numerous books on the subject. There’s - so far - one little and unsubstantial CA post to support yours … oh, and a few poems). You have yet to prove your case. The burden of proof is still on you.

No, no more than you can substantiate that the 8 foot, 345 pound purple dragon living in your neighbor’s basement does not exist.

But when we speak of God we speak of absolute characteristics and the highest degree of perfection in a knowable Being.

This does not apply to Santa Claus, who, as someone has already humorously pointed out, DOES actually exist in the person of Saint Nicholas of Myra.

Perhaps most amusing about your thread is that you have posted a not-at-all-subtle apprisal of theism on a CATHOLIC forum the day before the beginning of Lent.

If you’re looking to grab some converts for Infidels.org or whatever organization you hail from, I suggest trying another board.
 
Santa does exist–in two ways. Firstly, he is a real saint who lived and died and did real things. He is on the Universal Calendar of Saints in the Catholic Church, as Mickey cited and you skipped over. 😉

And secondly, Santa of the kind you described is more than an imaginary character–he is the spirit of joy, abundance, and giving that you would never have heard of if Jesus Christ hadn’t been born, lived his life as he did, and been worshiped for centuries by his followers.

I’m afraid you know nothing of what myth truly means, but are stuck in the pedantic, 19th century notion that only those things you can see, weigh, measure, and poke exist. That leaves out an awful lot of the “real” world, you know. People like Einstein, Hawking, and even Gould would tell you that.

Yep, St. Nicholas did exist and is in Heaven right now, more alive than you or me. So, I can’t provide any evidence that he is a figment of any imagination- he IS real.
