Were the Anglican Church to become dis-established, you can depend on Atheism to rush in to fill the vaccuum vacated by Anglicanism, making our position within society more fragile through further discrimination against Christian faith and belief.

Blessings and peace
My UK Anglican experience taught me that when I see the word “Anglican”, I need to be careful, since it can mean many things. There is a vibrancy in the Church of England that we don’t see in the US, especially many of the London Churches (Holy Trinity Brompton, All Souls Langham Place, St. Hellens Bishopgate, etc.) filled with 20 and 30 somethings. There are great English theologians such as John Stott, JI Packer, NT Wright, and Oz Guinness. However, there are also some rather lamentable English Anglicans; the former Bishop of Durham comes to mind.

I disagree with your antidisestablishmentarianism (and not just so that I can adduce that word). Statistically, Christianity is much more influential in countries such as the US where there has never been a national state church than in European countries where there has or is. This is simple monopoly market theory: when a dominant player has nearly 100% of any market, it is bad for the consumer. The US Roman Catholic church enjoys much greater participation than here in Spain, where it enjoys special privileges from the state. Same reason.

Bring on the completion, say I. In the marketplace of ideas, Christianity will always win in the long run. As Pope John Paul II said, “don’t be afraid”.

Now, let me advise you to be careful about generalizations concerning the Orthodox Churches. It is meaningless to speak of the “Orthodox Church,” because one has to then ask, “Which one?” And as far as saying that the Orthodox view this or that other Christian group in such and such a way, then the same applies.
Yes and no. They have no Pope and no catechism, so saying “which one” is not as easy as in the RCC. However, the IC, purgatory, papal authority issues are common to all EO churches in all jurisdictions that I am aware of. My impression is that there is considerable unity in theology throughout Eastern Orthodox jurisdictions, in spite of some latitude on certain issues (Aerial toll houses comes to mind).
An Orthodox Patriarch (Jonah, I believe) spoke to the new Anglican Church in North America convention. Much is made of this as an indication of the “Orthodox” position. But this man does not speak for all Orthodox Churches, nor even for all Orthodox Churches in North America. No one does.
I got the T-shirt on this one. See my post #33. I agree with you.

Who speaks for all Roman Catholic Churches in North America?

If I, an Anglican, use “divorce” on this board, you can imagine the response.
:confused::confused::confused: I don’t understand emeraldcoast’s statement or your reply Madrid?:confused:
Assuming you are not joking as well, Emeraldcoast referred to the OP’s use of the word “annulment”.

As soon as that poster stops laughing, I do hope we will be enlightened about Emeraldcoast’s opinion.

Hi JesusforMadrid,

I will try to post in a bit after I fix lunch for my kids and switch out some laundry.

God Bless!

I’m actually not joking, seriously didn’t understand what was so humerous. I still don’t…

Who speaks for all Roman Catholic Churches in North America?
The Diocesan Bishops speak for their particular Sees. And the Holy Father speaks for all Sees, as the successor to St. Peter.

There is no “American Church” or “Canadian Church” or “North American Church”, so there is no one to speak for these entities. There is the Catholic Church. Where something like a national Bishop’s Conference has authority in an area, it is delegated to it by the Holy Father through the Curia. It’s not as if these entities have power in their own right, by virtue of their existence. This was illustrated with respect to the liturgical translations. The English ones were not up to snuff, so the conferences were ordered to adopt ones that were. And anything they suggested could not go into effect without approval of the Curia.

Blessings,

Gerry
