Don’t believe in Purgatory!!??

😱

Ed: I don’t believe in Hell.
Joe: You’ll believe it when you get there. 🤬

Same applies to purgatory, seems to me.

From the little bit of reading I was doing on purgatory tonight, I am led to believe that it’s very difficult to completely miss purgatory. Few souls manage it. But of course, it is possible.

I remember in one part of the DM diary saying Saint Faustina was “sentenced” to one day in purgatory, at that particular point in time, but that was before all her suffering and purgatory on Earth. I think Saint Faustina went straight to heaven, but I can’t be 101% certain.

I explained to my children that All Souls Day was like a Healing Mass for all those who lost someone in the past year. My children love the new Disney Jr series, “Elana if Avalor” and have learned quite a bit about the Day if the Dead from a Latin view. This did help comfort them and hopefully heal them some on the loss of their Nana (my MIL).

As we sat in mass and 54 names were read, I noticed that our family all came to support My FIL. Most there were. It as lucky. Many were elderly (widowed?) and alone. It has got me pondering how few of the church militant are working to empty purgatory. Lord have Mercy!

Greetings! Are you still living in Camelopardilis, by the way? Good to see you.

I was able to watch “Purgatory: the forgotten church” on EWTN today. It refreshes my understanding, and also made me aware of needing to get back to praying for the dead. I thought it interesting that one man collected prayer cards of every funeral at his parish. That is devotion!

I should have watched that! Many of the souls there supposedly say they get completely forgotten. Maybe it’s on youtube but I doubt it…going to check.

(great avatar, by the way)

also made me aware of needing to get back to praying for the dead.
I actually got into praying for the dead after my mom died and I went to the next All Souls Day Mass because I was thinking of her. Before that I didn’t typically go to Mass on All Souls Day (and wasn’t even getting to Mass every Sunday but that’s another story). The priest, who was same priest who did her funeral, preached on how important it was to pray for the dead. This made me remember when I was little and mom was always mentioning prayers or offering something up for the Poor Souls in Purgatory. I was taught to say at the end of prayers and after the sign of the Cross, “Jesus have mercy on the poor souls in Purgatory and the souls on earth.” I had actually managed to forget that entirely and it took a while to come back.

I thought, “Praying for the dead is something I can do” because you can do it from anywhere. Most ministries don’t work for me because I travel a lot and am so busy. But you can pray for the dead very easily wherever you are. So I started looking up how to go about it and get indulgences for them and stuff. I figured there were many dead people with no one to pray for them so I could help there. It has helped my spiritual life a lot and makes me feel useful. I would hope one day to meet all the dead people I pray for.

Travel a lot? It would be interesting to see different cemeteries. 🤔

Here’s the cemetery at St. Andrew’s Benedictine Abbey in the desert community of Valyermo, CA. I visited there last year. I went to Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City (closer to my home) yesterday to pray for my departed friends and family and the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

Here’s the one where I prayed yesterday. The cemetery is at the oldest Catholic parish in Pennsylvania, dating back to 1730. It’s actually more scenic in the front of the church but I chose to go to the far back.

Saint Gemma has a story to tell about a soul:

Gemma knew by Divine inspiration that in the Convent of Passionist Nuns at Corneto [Italy] there was a Religious Sister very dear to God who was near death. She asked me about it, and on my answering that it was so, she at once began to implore of Jesus to make that particular Religious expiate all her faults on her deathbed, so that breathing her last she might enter Paradise at once. Her prayer, at least in part, was heard. The Sister suffered greatly and died in a few months. Gemma told those in her home of it in order that they might pray for the deceased, and she gave her name, Mary Teresa of the Infant Jesus, as she was not known in Lucca. After her death, this soul appeared to her full of sorrow, imploring her help as she was undergoing great torments in Purgatory for certain defects.

Nothing more was needed to set all the fibers of Gemma’s heart in motion. From that moment she gave herself no rest; -prayers, tears and loving petitions to Our Lord.
"Jesus, save her," she was overheard to exclaim. "Jesus, take Mary Teresa to Paradise without delay. She is a soul that is most dear to Thee. Let me suffer much for her; I want her to be in heaven."
During this time Gemma writes the following in her Diary:

"It was around 9:30 and I was reading; all of a sudden I am shaken by a hand resting gently on my left shoulder. I turn in fright; I was afraid and tried to call out, but I was held back. I turned and saw a person dressed in white; I recognized it was a woman; I looked and her expression assured me I had nothing to fear: “Gemma,” she said after some moments, “do you know me?” I said no, because that was the truth; she responded: "I am Mother Maria Teresa of the Infant Jesus: I thank you so, so much for the great concern you have shown me because soon I shall be able to attain my eternal happiness."All this happened while I was awake and fully aware of myself

Elizabeth Kindelmann (the Flame of Love mystic) also said something about feeling the souls she prayed for go to paradise. And Padre Pio would see them flying to heaven.

I’d like to see or feel a soul go up when I pray. Maybe someday.

Saint Faustina very often talks about the souls in purgatory in her diary. (Which is probably my favorite spiritual book, bar the bible and catechism.)

Her first reference, I think, is in pragraph 20…

"Shortly after this, I fell ill [general exhaustion]. The dear Mother Superior sent me with two
other sisters for a rest to Skolimow, not far from Warsaw. It was at that time that I asked
the Lord who else I should pray for. Jesus said that on the following night He would let me
know for whom I should pray.

[The Next night] I saw my Guardian Angel, who ordered me to follow him. In a moment I
was in a misty place full of fire in which there was a great crowd of suffering souls. They
were praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves; only we can come to their aid. The
flames which were burning them did not touch me at all. My Guardian Angel did not leave
me for an instant. I asked these souls what their greatest suffering was. They answered me
in one voice that their greatest torment was longing for God. I saw Our Lady visiting the
souls in Purgatory. The souls call her “The Star of the Sea.” She brings them refreshment. I
wanted to talk with them some more, but my Guardian Angel beckoned me to leave. We
went out of that prison of suffering.[I heard and interior voice] which said, My mercy does
not want this, but justice demands it.
Since that time, I am in closer communion with
the suffering souls."
