Isaiah 60:1-6
Psalms 72:1-2,7-8,10-13
Ephesians 3:2-3.5-6
Matthew 2:1-12
In today’s gospel, when the wise men left Herod, the star appeared and went forward, leading them to Jesus. They
seemed surprised to see the star, and I was wondering if
the reason they stopped at Herod’s is because the star
stopped or disappeared there. Was it really so important
that they stop at Herod’s? Was it all part of the plan? If
they never stopped there, perhaps the innocent children
would not have been killed. How could this hideous action
be part of God’s plan? Then it says the wise men returned
to their own country by another way. Country - not plural,
one country. What country was it? The bible does not say.
In Isaiah’s prophecy, it says that everyone in Sheba will come, bringing gold and incense. I guess maybe they weren’t talking
about Jesus after all, since I don’t think everyone from Sheba
came.
In the psalm, we are told that all nations shall serve Him,
and all kings shall fall prostate. I like to think it’s talking
about Jesus, but it hasn’t happened yet, and when Jesus
comes again, won’t it be the end of the nations?
Today is the day of St. Elisabeth Ann Seton, who invented the
parochial school system in America. Her readings include
Corinthians 13 and the story of Martha and Mary. In that story,
Jesus tells Martha that only one thing is needed, only one.
