Let's talk about today's readings 12/08/08

In Genesis it says the man named his wife Eve because she was the mother of all those who live. This happened just after God
gave them a severe ‘talking to’. Can you imagine all this time Eve did not have a name? I always thought Eve ate that fruit because
she was tired of being second banana. But wow, she didn’t even have a name! And then who chose her name? Adam!

Psalm 97 says sing to the Lord a new song. Are there any new songs? Mathematically speaking, are there not a finite number of notes? Can anyone discover new notes? That would be like discovering a new color that no one has ever seen.

In Ephesians it says before world was made, He chose us.
Naturally, He didn’t choose anyone for destruction. The thought
crosses my mind of two children and a toy in the room. Neither one is playing with that particular toy, but when one goes to it,
suddenly the other wants it. He would have never wanted it if
the first one didn’t go to it. Have you seen kids do this?
So maybe God chose some who are like the first child to go
for the toy (faith in Jesus), so that the ones who are like the second one would get interested.

In Luke, Mary tells the angel, “How can this be, since I have no
husband?” Why? she was about to be married, didn’t she expect to have children?

In today’s preface, it says, “You allowed no stain of Adam’s sin to touch the Virgin Mary” I wonder why they don’t mention Eve instead? She is the woman like Mary.

What struck me? Adam’s poor excuse for eating the apple.
Then he asked, “Who told you that you were naked? You have eaten, then, from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat!” The man replied, “The woman whom **you **put here with me–she gave me fruit from the tree, so I ate it.”

This will set the precedent of millenia of poor excuses given by husbands everywhere! 😉

On a side note, me and a friend nearly busted out laughing in Mass as we realized how Adam was trying to blame God for eating the apple (since God put the woman there).
 
For some reason, it never struck me until today that in Gen 3:15, “woman” is singular — “the woman”. That’s when it really becomes obvious that it is a prophetic reference to Mary.

Just a couple favorite “Mary” quotes I’d like to share:
From today’s office of readings, St. Anselm says -
Without God’s Son, nothing could exist;
without Mary’s Son, nothing could be redeemed."

Another - by Kenneth Howell (wrote the author’s name down, but not the book/article??? it came from):
"We go to Jesus the way that He came to us – through Mary."
