Let's talk about today's readings 12/16/08

Zephaniah 3:1-2.9-13
Psalm 33
Matthew 21:28-32

In today’s gospel, one son said no to his father, but his actions said yes. The other son said yes to his father, but his actions said no. I think about this in the way it concerns other religions, and even atheism. Many people say no to God with their words, but then say yes to Him by their loving and kind actions. Other people say Yes to God with their words, then they say no to Him with their mean actions. Jesus said not those who say “Lord, Lord”, will enter into the kingdom of heaven, but those who do the will of the Father. His will is that we love one another as He has loved us.

So what struck you about today’s readings?

Pairing these readings from Zep 3 with the parable of the 2 sons is fantastic!

Looking at Zephaniah…
  • (3:9) Confusion of Babel ends, the ‘pure speech’ change will be Christians praising the Lord!
  • (3:10) Virgin Mary birthing our Lord
  • (3:11) then sins will be forgiven by Christ. The ruling priests, the Pharisees & Levites & scribes will be removed, with their temples destroyed (AD70, destruction of Jerusalem)
  • (3:12) The definition of the resulting Christian … humble, holy, truthful.
    All in all, this passage prophesies the conversion of Gentiles to Christianity.
Then with the 2 sons parable, Jesus is slamming the ruling priests by comparing their actions with the second son…They falsely say ‘Yes’, but don’t do anything. Whereas the first son, (gentiles & unbelievers), initially say no, as they don’t believe, but later change their mind & do the work of the Lord. That the gentiles embrace the kingdom because when they are showed - they believe. But the priests are showed and still do nothing.

Prophecy in Zeb reinforced by the 2 sons parable!
 
Oh very good! And what do you think about verse 13: …They shall do no wrong and speak no lies; nor shall there be found in their mouths a deceitful tongue…
Do you think it’s a prophecy of future Christians?

Well, I wish it was, but it can’t be… we are all sinners. But isn’t this verse speaking to the Apostles and the teachings?

I’m sure the apostles were sinners also, can you explain further what you mean? In their future though, they came to a point
where they did no wrong and spoke no lies. They defended
Jesus with all truth, and laid down their lives for Him. If it was
in the future of the apostles, why can’t it be in our future too?
 
Very good point. Did the Apostles sin? I can presume they sinned before their apostleship, & they were born with original sin. I personally believe they were so filled with the spirit after resurrection, just no room in there for sin.

And thanks for your other good point … absolutely, yes, it can be in our future. Just as the Apostles!
