Judges 13:2-7.24-25
Psalm 70
Luke 11:5-25

Today in Judges we hear about the preparation for the birth of Samson, and in the gospel, preparation for the birth of John the Baptist. Both sets of parents were instructed that they should
not ever give their children wine or strong drink. A Nazarite was
a person who wanted to be set apart and holy. They couldn’t
cut their hair or take strong drink.

I wonder why not drinking was a sign of holiness in Old Testament times, yet Jesus came eating and drinking, and
making a miracle at Cana? Maybe it’s because they had to
drink back then to kill the germs in the water, and it was a
miracle if the person grew all the way up without dying if they
didn’t take wine.

I can see the holiness in not drinking, since drinking can cause
so much sorrow when overdone. But I can’t understand why it
was considered holy not to cut your hair. I would like to know
if Jesus cut his hair?

The other thing that struck me was when Zechariah was told
that his child would come “with the Spirit and power of Elijah”,
did he understand who his son was? If so, why didn’t they tell
anyone? It was the same with Mary, she didn’t tell anyone anything but “treasured these things in her heart”. Yet with us
today, our children are not Jesus or John the Baptist, but we
feel the need to share every little “great” thing about them with
our family and close friends.

So what struck you about today’s readings? :bible1:
