Addendum to post 4:
I missed the end of that article: so -
By papal decrees, Mary was already named mediatrix in 1931 and “Queen of Heaven” in 1954. Admiration for admirable people like Mary is wonderful, but this is way over the top. See Jeremiah 44, where God angrily condemns the Jews to death by famine and sword for paying homage to the “Queen of Heaven.”
The verses about the QoH are these:
The exact phrase of
queen of heaven was found in 5 verses, shown below: these are the only appearances of these words.
Jer 7:18 The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead [their] dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.
Jer 44:17 But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for [then] had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.
Jer 44:18 But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all [things], and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.
Jer 44:19 And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men?
Jer 44:25 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying; Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your hand, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her: ye will surely accomplish your vows, and surely perform your vows.
Compare this with how the CC behaves toward Mary.
Do Catholics:
- gather wood
- kindle fire
- knead dough
- make cakes
- burn incense
- vow to burn incense to her
- pour out drink offerings to her
- or pour out drink offerings to other gods
- or pour out drink offerings to the Saints ?
No. That is the answer to every single item. Catholics do not do any of these things in her honour.
Do we do any of the things mentioned in these verses to the honour of anyone at all?
Yes: we do burn incense - not to honour Mary, or other gods than God, or the Saints; we use incense in the Church for the worship of the Blessed Trinity, Who alone is God. Vows too play a part in the honour paid to her - or they did - and they are directed to her Son
As for the other things, they play no part in Christian worship. In other words, these verses do not describe anything done in honour of Mary, nor in honour of the other Saints, nor in the worship of Almighty God. The practices the Bible describes as used in worship of the QoH, are not those by which we honour Mary.
All Mary has in common with the QoH is a title. That is all.
This must mean Evangelicals worship Zeus: why not ? He, like Jesus, is called “Saviour”. ##
The tens of thousands of Catholic martyrs, apostles, missionaries and devoted religious who have given their blood, sweat and tears to their supreme Lord Jesus for centuries deserve a purer posterity than this.
An awful lot of them have been very devoted to her - the Legion of Mary in China was formed after an Irish missionary bishop, the co-founder of the Columban Fathers, suggested to one of the Fathers that he ought to try out Frank Duff’s ideas. I know this because I was fortunate enough to meet the priest in question at a Legion talk. He told us how he had been imprisoned for three years by the Communists, and that it was Our Lady who kept him sane in all that time. He gave it as his conviction that the Legion had stiffened the resolve of the Chinese Church (my summary of his words BTW) - and said the Legion had “spread like wildfire”.
Therefore, if China is at all typical, she strengthens and assists the Church by her prayers: to honour her, is most decidedly very fortifying for the Church. And the Church would have no resilience or strength at all, if God did not ceaselessly protect her. So it seems pretty clear, that to honour Mary is very acceptable to God ##
