Earlier this week, President Bush talked candidly about his faith to The Washington Times saying he didn’t “see how you can be president without a relationship with the Lord.” What’s true for the president is true for anyone facing great challenges, whether it’s joblessness, alcoholism, or domestic abuse. That’s the principle behind the president’s faith-based initiative, which seeks to level the playing field and guarantee equal access to government aid programs for religious charities. That makes it all the more gratifying that President Bush has decided to elevate the status of Jim Towey, the extremely effective leader of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. We learned today that he has been named Assistant to the President, a post with direct access to the Oval Office. Congressional Democrats have stalled progress on charitable choice, resisting attempts to protect the right of religious charities in hiring, in particular.
