Levites question

When the bible talks about the Levites are the only talking about the decendants of Levi? Or is it more than that? I’m not too clear where this tribe draws its lines? I looked Levites up on wikipedia and found an interesting family tree.

Its the tribe of Levi, which are the Jewish priesthood.

Zechariah was a Levite, for example, and hence was a priest.
 
The Levites had a role in Jewish religion analogous to the role of non-ordained religious today. Their role was distinct from the role of Jewish priests (which foreshadowed the true ordained priesthood).
 
How did you become a Levite? Was it a genealogical tribe?

Yes, there were 12 tribes of Israel in the Exodus. After the Golden Calf incident, “Calf-Gate”, Moses took the tribe of Levi and made them priests, thus separating them from the 12 tribes who would inherit the Promised Land. The Levites were the only tribe that didn’t participate in the um… “festivities” surrounding the golden calf. The Levites would get safe-cities, but they would be spread out through the lands of the other 12 tribes.

How was Israel still 12 tribes if the Levi’s were separated from among them? The tribe of Joseph was split up into 2 tribes, one for each of his sons - Ephraim and … I can’t remember (Menassah, maybe?).

But, to answer your question, the tribe of Levi were the Levitical priests.

I don’t know enough to tell you that. Scott Hahn has a very good book on the History of the Old Testament. In it, he explains some of the tribes, but its part of the entire history. Very good read and easy to understand. Its called, “A Father who keeps His Promises”.

But, why don’t you want to read the Bible.

Well I have this thing about the Old Testament. Whenever I try to read the Old Testament I feel like I started watching a movie after it is already half way done. I get really confused on the background of what was going on with the times. I guess I have a hard time just reading something without asking questions. By the time I’m finished with a few chapters I have a list of questions about the text.

From what you just told me, you will absolutely LOVE Hahn’s book. I remember in reading the book’s introduction, Hahn used to read the Bible to his kids at bedtime. They’d have a myriad of questions (as you can well imagine). So he had to explain it to them, in a way that a child could understand. So he finally got the idea to make a book out of the story of the Bible he told his kids.

To those who are unfamiliar with the Old Testament, I think this book is invaluable in “putting all the pieces together”. Very good, indeed!
 
Their was a division between Kohanim and Levites. Kohanim-high priest and sacrificers- Levites-did all the rest.
