While I can only speculate as to the effects of communion on the hand on the level of perpetual adoration by the faithful (I think solid catechism by the priest can overcome the former) I am still perplexed at the vigor with which many Catholics defend receiving on the hand.

You have two methods, both of which are considered acceptable by the Church (hand and tongue) and yet people are still apparently ignorant as to the culture of carelessness that is created when human weakness and irreverence is allowed to flourish. I believe that certain practices such as standing during the consecration, poor behavior by EMs, and communion on the hand creates a culture in which such irreverence flourishes.

I don’t recognise this. I have seen adoration in all of the Catholic Churches I’ve ever visited, there are always people before the tabernacle. I’ve also seen adoration and benediction play a pivotal role in the Charismatic renewal, and in all the retreats and other Catholic prayer events I’ve ever been to.
unfortunately there are places in this country that this just isn’t true. Out of 12 Parishes in my area, only one of them have Adoration once a week. The last time I was there, two weeks ago, I was alone in the Chapel except for one of the Permanent Deacons and his friend who chatted and laughed the whole time I was there. Very discouraging. This is the same Deacon who consistently “prayed” before proclaiming the Gospel, “The Lord is with you.”

You put these among the faithful.??? I think cafeteria Catholicism would be more descriptive. If they do not believe what the Church believes and teaches, they are not truly Catholic, thus not part of the faithful.

A couple of years back I attended a Family Religious Ed session at my parish. It was on “Eucharist.” The Real Presence wasn’t even mentioned. Not once. I kept waiting for them to mention the Real Presence, but it didn’t happen… The emphasis was entirely placed upon Christ’s presence in the word, the priest and the congregation during the Mass.

That’s when I decided to teach Catechism at home because these people won’t get to educate my children. Other than some required classes for Sacraments.

We have Adoration every First Friday, BTW.

So yeah, I think it’s possible to have “faithful” who don’t know any better. There are plenty of people who go to a class like that and look no further, because they’re too busy with other things. They need to mow the lawn; they need to drive their kid to little league and they think, “Well Catholics don’t really believe in the Real Presence anymore. That’s just archaic.”
