To Peter and everyone else (including me):I agree with you, for the most part.
However, your two options (win or exchange ideas) seem to leave out completely a most important third one – **to come to know the truth **– as if that isn’t a live option, at all.
You see, often what is left unstated is more important than what gets repeated over and over, again.
Perhaps I am just getting grumpy in my old age and have become very impatient with and tired of the “commonly known” inanities being written up again and again as if by mere repetition they will come to encapsulate the epitome of all truth.
Repetition is the key to winning hearts and minds. Winning is the goal of course. This kind of winning can occur in spite of the truth. As Christians, we must be on our guard. As opposed to the days when people actually sent letters of complaint or praise that had real names and addresses, we now have a number of anonymous types who are here for a number of reasons. We should do our best to think well and act well, even when the same argument appears over and over, and even when it’s just an “opinion” which can be honestly held or dishonestly spread. Sadly, there is a subset of internet posters known as “astoturf.” And just like the fake grass, pretend to be just another voice - a regular guy. Instead, they are paid mercenaries who go to sites like this and do their employer’s bidding. There are amoral people out there and others who just like to stir the pot for some kind of “fun.” Still others, I’m sad to say to say, who have Obsessive Compulsive Posting Disorder - and they have written vile things just to get a reaction, plus spread lies, rumors and other bits of untruth.
Over the years, I’ve learned to step back, take a deep breath, and while I am required to check on their posts where I work (not here), I’ve seen the same patterns appear over and over again elsewhere, including here. Ignoring most of them, where I work, usually works. In those rare cases where they cross a legal line, I pass that post on to the appropriate people.
To those like Peter, who speak with clarity, even though they may be met with a lack of charity, or statements that appear to be patently untrue, or veiled insults, remember: Remain as you are. There are those who are good witnesses for the truth but we must be aware that every trick in the book can and will be used against us. Let us not forget that our witness needs to be good, to avoid anger, bitterness and frustration. If telling the truth to the masses was easy… well, it’s not. And that is what we are to expect. When feeling burned out, take a short break. No single person can shoulder it all.
Peace,
Ed
