I have noticed that in many elements of popular culture LGBT are represented in a scary way. If you watch, Ugly Betty, there is a transsexual Alexis Meade who has poor character. Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kil!! has murderous LGBT women. Joker, from Batman, has had male lovers and has a homoerotic fascination with Batman. In the Passion of Christ, the image of the devil is gender neutral. In Brokeback Mountain, the gay men’s lives are mostly consumed with sex and irresponsibility. Even Ellen de Generes and Paris Hilton may be well known for digging into other people’s sexual lives. Maybe I am overanalyzing, missing something obvious, accidentally prejudiced, but most of the LGBT media images that I can consciously remember seeing are quite scary to me.
Are there any media representations of LGBT that are positive and show them living chaste, positive, and holy lives where they are not victims, criminals, or consumed with sex? Is this even possible, given that one cannot tell if someone is LGBT unless one talks about it and there may be (I don’t know, perhaps I am wrong) little reason to talk about it except with one’s closest friends, family, Church, and medical community if someone is sincerely trying to be chaste and holy? Perhaps the closest to a positive and Catholic representation would be a person who was wise and virtuous and chaste and holy but simply not interested in dating or making sexual comments even though this person does not talk about being LGBT? Simply an inspiring story involving other people without an actual sexual subplot going on? Perhaps pro-life activism educating people on the need to love even those with disabilities. (Approximately 93% of babies born with Down Syndrome are aborted in this country)
LGBT people are upset (although maybe I do not actually understand the issue) that they feel pressured into romantic relationships. Actually perhaps heterosexuals are as well. I know several friends who would rather date someone wrong - who abuses, them, mistreats them, uses them - then stay single. Perhaps there needs to be an effort in our society to learn what true love looks like and why it is worth waiting for and people need to be more educated on the worth of the consecrated single life.

Perhaps within 40 years there might be a closet gay president if he had great self-respect for himself and great confidence and self-control despite his status. See the New York Times article For Good Self Control, Try Getting Religious About It: forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=309551 Prayer helps extremely with developing self-control. Many recitations of the Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, and Liturgy of the Hours are particularly helpful. Daily Mass to receive the Eucharist is the absolute best of course. Yet, these things are only going to help the soul that is not living in mortal sin in danger of Hellfire.
Thank you for reading my thoughts.
