There are certain words and phrases that are mentioned by liberal religious and lay-people that act as warning flags for me (and offer a bit of cynical amusement, I have to say. Yes, I’m evil 🙂 ).

Please help me list such words and phrases, as it might save us all some time in discerning the messages we are getting in the media. Try to keep it brief and on-topic. If this becomes a popular thread, it’ll be easier for people to skim through to find the ‘jewels’ .😃

I’ll start:
  • Social justice
  • Eco-awareness
  • Inclusivity
  • Fairness
  • ‘In a very real sense’
  • Diversity
  • Innovative
  • Meaningful
  • Dialogue
  • Meaningful dialogue
  • Empower
  • Engaging
  • Community
Note: each word by itself is harmless, even laudable. But a few of them together, in a religious context, tend to have me heading for the door, metaphorically speaking. In a very real sense.

It is right that you have “Dialogue” on there, but make sure you note that it is used primarily as a verb. 🙂

We are Church — when the laity call for dissent
Armchair Bishops — when the laity call for faithfulness

  • charity - (meant in the rollover and cower fashion)
  • non-essential differences
  • we are all catholic - (with a little “c” inferring that we are all just one big happy)
  • ecumenical - (as an excuse for watering down the Mass)
I’m sure I’ll have more later. 😉

You got the ‘gems’ all right!

[good, you’ve got ‘empower’…can’t STAND that word]

How 'bout ‘ministry’-seems that everything in the liberal mindset is a ‘ministry’…

My all time favorites:
  • “Gathering Space” (used to be Church)
  • “Table” (used to be Altar)
  • “Server” (used to be altarboy)
  • “Lector” (used to be priest or deacon)
  • Extrodinary Ministers of Holy Communion (used to be priest,
or deacons. ( and Ordinary is a far more accurate discription…
everyday, every Mass, darn near everywhere sure is NOT
extrodinary! (nor is it covered by Indults.)

I consider the following words to be in the same category.

“the children”
“Africa”
“the poor”
“Aids”
“undocumented workers”
“tolerant”
“awareness”

“pro-active”
“at the end of the day”

I’ll think of more later…

Oh, and this isn’t really a “liberal” buzzword, but I get really annoyed when people say something was “literally” something, when they really mean “figuratively.”

And don’t even get me started on the misuse of the apostrophe… Can’t people read and write anymore? 🤷

  • Experience
  • Spiritual (or Spirituality)
  • Culture
  • “Own way”
  • Interpretation
  • Light
  • Father/Mother-God
  • “We are Eucharist”
  • Womenpriest
  • Relevant (I HATE it when people say they are doing such and such to make the Mass ‘relevant for today’s times’ or ‘today’s youth’!)

Creator
Redeemer
Sanctifier
Fellowship
Priesthood of the Believers
“Spirit”
Free Choice
Spirit of Assisi

Good, I am not the only one who cringes at the word social justice, not that it is a bad concept but it is a word that the liberals just keep pushing and pushing on people as if it is the center point of the Christian life, not prayer or having a strong faith and everything else.

“Sustainability”
“Smart Growth”
“Carbon neutral”
“Greenspace”
“Learning Organization Training”
“Gender neutral”

Social Justice is also one that makes me cringe. It’s already listed but I wanted to pile on.

also if you are in a liberal parish and critical of how it is run, you are branded:

“traditional”
“conservative”
“strict”
“dinosaur”
“against the Spirit of Vatican II”

and if you are praying the rosary at the Church:
“out of date”
“for children or old ladies”

and in the confessional booth
“well, that is probably not a sin”
“don’t beat yourself up over it”
“that isn’t a sin anymore”

Tolerance is a red flag for me. As is “extremist” or “radical” since it’s usually applied to perfectly orthodox beliefs.

Stinky liberals and their perverse language. Social Justice??? grrrrr… Not on my watch and not in my Church.

And if you are on the extreme right wing, you can just label everything that you disagree with as “moral relativism.” No actual facts required. 😮
