This false notion that you must be a conservative Republican in order to be a “real” Catholic or Christian pushed by many on these forums is laughable.
Yeah, I’m sure right wing policies on cutting welfare, tax breaks for the 1% and deporting immigrants (just to give a few examples) are a wonderful fit with Catholic social teachings.

Not that I (necessarily) agree with these things, but the fact remains that welfare and tax breaks are not, and cannot be because of their nature, intrinsic moral issues.
One can legitimately think that welfare is, prudentially, a bad decision, and one can legitimately vehemently disagree with it, and remain a good Catholic, in fact a saint.

At some point we have to either dramatically increase taxes or decrease spending or both.
They still pay the highest tax rates.
Not all immigrants (e.g criminals) should be allowed in the country.
I’m not saying that I necessarily support any of the things you listed, because to a large extent I don’t, but nothing in them is intrinsically wrong so that a Catholic can’t support it. Unlike, say, gay “marriage” or abortion.are a wonderful fit with Catholic social teachings.

Catholics may certainly hold liberal or conservative beliefs when it comes to fiscal policies. Unfettered capitalism and communism are not in-line with the Church teachings, but anything in-between is fair game to debate.
So it is utterly false that one has to be a “conservative Republican”, and I’ve never heard anyone say that.
I have heard people argue why a liberal Catholic shouldn’t support the Democratic Party, however, as it has aligned itself with intrinsic moral evils. Were I inclined in the liberal direction fiscally, I’d be a liberal independent, not a Democrat.
