Has anyone read the book “Goodbye, Good Men” by Michael S. Rose? I haven’t, but a few people on this forum have recommended it to me.

Is there any truth in the theory that liberals within the Seminaries deliberately denied entry to those who held orthodox views concerning chastity, sexuality and women in the Priesthood? I have even heard that they frowned upon people who expressed a particular devotion to traditional spiritual practices such as the Rosary.

I will admit that this seems far fetched and unbelievable, but surely there is some truth to this, given the fact that Rose wrote a whole book on the subject.

Yes, it is true.

One of the priests interviewed in his book is Father Trigilio of EWTN, and he was harassed and obstructed by homosexual and dissenting Priests and seminarians. Several seminaries were closed by Rome b/c of the homosexual dominance therein. In Denver, Achbp. Chaput closed the seminary and re-opened it with completely new faculty and staff b/c of such issues.

God Bless

An interesting perspective on the book can be found at:
culturewars.com/2002/may02_ggm.html

Where it is written:
But while Rose may be correct in certain respects, and while his claims have foundation, neither are they entirely accurate, and his methods are at least questionable. The first and most basic problem is his technique: He piles on horror story after horror story, relying on the weight of the indignation aroused in the reader to carry his point. There is a great deal of narrative and relatively little analysis until the last two chapters of the book. His conclusion seems to be that the climate of experimentation and dissent of the 70’s and 80’s stifled or sidetracked many vocations to the priesthood. He further concludes that orthodoxy and reverence provide a fertile breeding ground for vocations. These statements are certainly true, but they did not require a 360 page litany of horror stories in order to be demonstrated.
I have perused the book, but have my own seminary horror stories (I didn’t need his litany), and didn’t feel it was up to date or objective.

His objections are fair enough for times and places… Visiting the semiaries and meeting the seminarians that I have since this book was published some 7 years ago… I don’t know how useful it is today.

The priesthood can be suppressed, it can NEVER be ruined.

The book is excellent.

I definately believe it and it sure explains a lot, doesn’t it?

**Several conservative Catholic publications have reviewed it, among them The National Catholic Register, have reviewed it and found it wanting.

One such said that they wished some of the things he said were true, but they checked out many of his statements and found them to be–to put it sweetly–inaccurate.**

Do you have a link for that?
Plus, are you sure it was the National Catholic Register or the National Catholic Reporter? The Register is good, the Reporter isn’t. I’d appreciate a link to what you are saying.

"Good’ and “bad” depending on your point of view.

–perhaps describing the NC Register as conservative and the NC Reporter as liberal would be more accurate.

**I know the difference between the Reporter and the Register, and I said Register.

This was several years ago. I don’t know if the reviews are still on line. You can google “Goodbye, Good Men” + “Reviews”.**
