Okay I want to foster some debate, should Catholics be more Conservative politically or should they be Libertarian politically? Defend your position. (or if you have another answer feel free to share your thoughts) (also PS. I understand that this isnt a black and white issue, but Im just using labels because they are convenient)

Aw come on—I’m trying to get my Lent on over here and you’re encouraging a flame war!

I object! To this thread. 😆

Nothing good is going to come of this. It is divisive and serves only as provocative seed for an uncharitable battle.

I’m in the United States, I’d consider Libertarian a sect of Conservativism, since they agree on federal power being reduced and more economic freedom.

I think the seperation that is popular is part of social policy - namely, the legalisation of weed or other drugs.

If my state had a vote on it, I don’t think I’d vote against legalisation, but I never recommend anyone to do drugs, and I highly discourage. I personally think it’s stupid, but I don’t want to control other people.

Nothing wrong with labels. They are needed to identify error. If the nine ‘Catholic’ senators that voted for infanticide can call themselves Catholic then a distinction has to be made.

Problem with this is that libertarianism is older than conservatism. American conservatism basically formed as libertarians and anti-communists joined forces and rediscovered Burke.

Conservatives and libertarians come at things with fundamentally different worldviews – one reasons a priori, the other a posteriori. While they may agree on some policy points, particularly in economics, they’re not as similar as some would portray them.

I hate bring politics into anything having to do with the Catholic Church.
Jesus Christ taught that we should love one another and to serve one another as sisters and brothers in this world.
Any division that comes, especially when it comes to politics, is counterproductive and wrong.
There is not a conservative Jesus, a middle of the road Jesus, a libertarian Jesus, a progressive Jesus, or a liberal Jesus. No, there is one Jesus. We are Catholics, ALL.
Though we, as Christ’s followers, may differ on political issues, our trust in Jesus Christ is what life is all about.
We are called to give praise and glory to God in all that we say and do. And to love one another as brothers and sisters.
Fighting, fearing, and hating others is counterproductive, and wrong.
God is good. All praise and glory goes to God today and every day!
🙏🙏🙏

Lemme pop some popcorn.

Actually, why can’t we be libertarian within reason, conservative where it applies, and liberal when needed (although imo that may be few and far between ). Just live for Christ without labels.

Good grief, with as many threads here that end up with a flame war, this is the last thing we need.

I completely agree that this is an unnecessary thread, particularly as we all know Jesus was a Democrat.

*giggle

I find it amusing that a thread on libertarianism has morphed into a thread on the use of labels.

It is interesting to see the tactic of the liberal left being used to control discussion. When one opposes a particular opinion or discussion the name calling starts (divisive, uncharitable) and criticism of the op for starting the thread.

Labels are the gospel of division. The original poster offered a thread to foster a “fight” for those who have politically libertarian or conservative leans on political issues of the day.

But the name calling, as in accusing people of being liberal because they advise caution as these threads tend to get out of hand, doesn’t count?

Libertarian politics is not liberal politics.

Libertarians believe in smaller government at the federal level, like most conservatives.

Do you mean “liberal politics”?
