Name calling? Labeling? I don’t mind. Bring it on! I’ll start. I’m a right wing ultra-traditionalist Catholic who despises modernism and all of its heresies!!! 😉

It is interesting to see the tactic of the liberal left being used to control discussion. When one opposes a particular opinion or discussion the name calling starts (divisive, uncharitable) and criticism of the op for starting the thread.
I’m not a liberal, and even I don’t think this is a good idea.

Nope, I think the OP means libertarian which as far as I understand it overlaps a lot with conservatives on economic issues as in very small government and a bit with the liberals on social issues as in anything goes as long as it doesn’t affect anybody else. Btw, it must be pointed out that pro-life libertarians exist.

Maybe.

The way it is written though, the OP seems to think that conservatism and libertarianism are opposite philosophies.

The opposite of conservative, at least in the US political system, would be a liberal/progressive.

Memo: Everything in life is not about conservative/middle of the road/liberal politics or Democrat/Independent/Republican.
Labeling everyone is divisive. Y’all versus Them.
We are all, us.
Divide and conquer is a despicable tactic of politicians. They tell us what we should fear and who we should blame for our fears.
Jesus Christ said to put your trust in the Lord.

Okay I want to foster some debate, should Catholics be more Conservative politically or should they be Libertarian politically? Defend your position. (or if you have another answer feel free to share your thoughts) (also PS. I understand that this isnt a black and white issue, but Im just using labels because they are convenient)
I would choose Conservative, assuming we are talking about true conservatism.

Unlike popular belief, libertarians are not all right leaning. The Democratic Party has their share of libertarians, but many simply don’t call themselves that.

Strictly speaking: a true libertarian is fiscally conservative and socially liberal. Throughout the history of Hollywood: Hollywood has typically be libertarian, not liberal. Even today, you will rarely hear the Hollywood elite calling for more taxes.

Libertarians want the govt out of their wallets, bedrooms, lives, etc.

Also, all of your pro-choice Republicans are libertarian. Now, this doesn’t mean that all libertarians are automatically pro-choice, but the pro-choice position is consistent with true libertarians.

On the other hand, true conservatives are not only fiscally conservative, but they are also socially conservative. True conservatives typically follow the concept of subsidiarity and are big on traditional christian values.

To me, the true traditional conservative (not the liberal conservative, neoconservatives, paleoconservatives, etc) are closest to traditional Catholic Social teaching.

Can the government make laws that are for people’s own good?

E.g. laws against drugs. Libertarian philosophy would have to allow people to use even the most dangerous drugs because it’s their free choice to take them and they’re not hurting anyone else.

Can we assume that people have been inducted into a social contract by growing up in our nation?

Libertarian philosophy would say that a person has to explicitly agree to a contract and therefore has no obligations towards the state when they grow older; anything they got as a child would be assumed to be freely given

Are taxes allowed?

This is an extension of the last point. Libertarians say the government can’t force you to give up part of your income because you never agreed to pay for the services they provide to the nation.

I hope I haven’t misrepresented libertarianism. But these are the reasons why I’m conservative

Libertarians don’t believe in government social programs like welfare, though. They are socially liberal as in they don’t care what anyone personally does, they just don’t want to pay for it at all.

I think that Catholicism is most in line with the traditional Conservative party. God’s moral law certainly is more in line, and so is the emphasis on helping your neighbor through private charity, and temporary public safety nets as needed. Libertarians don’t uphold a public moral standard for the most part…they are generally pro-choice, don’t care about same sex marriage, etc not to mention that they don’t believe in government sponsored welfare programs at all.

Exactly. I often look at it as true libertarian are the most selfish, self-centered political ideology
