Is it a sin if one lies in order to protect themselves or be safe? Like, if someone you do not or shouldn’t trust asks you personal information and such, … would it be a sin to lie to them?. So, what to do in that case?

No this is not a sin. Think it about it logically; you are doing this to protect yourself. Same goes for killing somebody. Murder is obviously a sin, but if you kill somebody in order to protect you or somebody else, than the act is justified. Though for the sake of being nice, it’s good to say, I’d rather not give out personal information or something that affect.

Yea, you are right… I could always say that. But, in certain situations it’s tough and I do not like being completely honest with people who I shouldn’t trust. Thanksss for your advice

**If someone intends to do harm with the knowledge of the truth, then they have lost their right to know that truth. So, it is fine to conceal the truth from that person in that case. By conceal I mean that you simply refuse to disclose it or you can disclose to them a partial truth which would prevent them from doing harm. Deception ought to be avoided. But, if deceiving the person is the only possible way to conceal that truth, then it is okay. Example would be with the Nazi Gestapo’s searching for Jews in a German’s house to kill. They would not leave unless the German tells them where they are, so the only way is to deceive them in saying they went South or something.

What if someone you don’t really trust ask you about something but you don’t want to say because they are just being nosy or whatever, what should someone do in that case?

Just don’t tell them. Tell them you’re uncomfortable talking about it or change the subject.

Kindly tell them to mind their own business. If they take offense it’s their problem, not yours.

I’ve read quite a few of your threads and I wonder if you’re dealing with scrupulosity? Or maybe it’s just late night curiosity? If it’s the former hopefully your priest can help you in some way.

Just tell them ‘that’s something I’m not prepared to discuss with you’. And leave it at that. If they keep asking just keep saying the same response.

You don’t need to give a reason or excuse not to tell someone something unless they have a right to know.

It’s a little bit of late night curiosity and I like the fact that I can ask all the questions I want here. You guys seem to do a good job of answering them. I just like to know what I should do in certain situations.

I’m not an expert, but I think it’s not that self-defense justifies killing, it’s that killing in self-defense isn’t a sin. I’m not sure though.

Gotcha and good to hear. 🙂

If someone you don’t know/trust asks personal information…you can simply reply…I don’t share personal info with people I don’t know well. Period. No lie told. 🙂

As taught by the Catholic Church, lying is an intrinsic evil. It is never permitted as moral action.

Silence, however, is permitted. If someone requests information to which he has no right, answer with truth. It is always permissible to answer that you will not answer. 😉

You live in Nazi-occupied France and are sheltering Jews under your floorboards. The SS pays you a visit and asks if you are secretly keeping Jews in your homes- cleverly, you respond with “Why would I be doing something like that?” to avoid lying. They press the matter and insist you answer the question. By your logic, the only permissible action would be to continue to avoid the question, which would of course arouse suspicion, putting you, your family, and those you are protecting in harms way.

Those in the witness protection program often spend their lives lying about their past.
Under cover police officers may be required to deny their true identities.
Are these sinful?

I believe that lying is a sin in general because people are entitled to the truth in most situations- but when they would use that information to cause harm, or maybe even if they’ve gotten to personal.

I guess lying would be sinful if it is for selfish reason or if you are hurting someone.

I don’t see anything here to which I can respond.

Of course those are sinful. Trying to do evil that good may come of it goes directly against what is taught by the Church (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1789). Lying is intrinsically evil. One’s intent and circumstance can never make an intrinsic evil into a good or neutral action. That means in ALL times and places lying is sinful.

If a person is to speak, he has a DUTY to speak the truth. The primary purpose of speech is to convey the truth with certitude…the ultimate purpose being for everyone to come into accord. If we speak in such a way as to form the minds of those around us on error, then, as is taught, we do VIOLENCE to them and void the purpose of speech.

It is ALWAYS a sin to lie.
