Agreed with you: this is an excellent article. I must check out that book some time. 🙂

The sad part is that thanks to the media, these “lies” are infecting young women all around the world. 😦

I agreed with some of it, but I disagreed with the part of about being fat was always a lie. Sometimes, we CAN be overweight. Besides being the sin of gluttony, it can cause us health and other problems. So, we don’t need to lie and tell ourselves no matter how overweight we are, it’s okay.

I say this, as a person who has been under my ideal weight, right on, and over to a point I felt it necessary to consult a nutritionist. I don’t think it’s good for me to lie and say, “Hey, I’m not fat” when I could be overweight to a point where I am considered obese! Incidentally, I have been obese, but have, as I said, not tried to buy into the lies that no matter what you are, always accept it.

No, and my health even improved once I lost weight. I felt better about myself. I was no longer in a state of sin, at least from that.

Oh, and about overweight being a “lie” young women believe, let me tell you about lies.

Once, I was FINALLY getting it together to not only admit the truth to myself, that I was overweight, but I was to a point I wanted to DO something about it. I saw my doctor, who was also overweight, and she asked me why I even cared. This was a DOCTOR!

So, the lies about weight are more that people will sometimes try to tell you you’re fine when you’re not, so that people’s feelings aren’t hurt, and other reasons. Still, a lie is a lie.

It’s best to say the truth, albeit gently.

hi Clearwater - the “fat” part is refering to women who are of a healthy weight, but still feel that they are too fat because they do not look like models and movie stars. This is becoming a big issue with the USA where girls and women unhealthy because they are too underweight. People don’t realize that models & actresses often lose weight right before a shoot or filming. They also have personal trainers personal nutritionists, etc.

They also don’t know about airbrushing.

Exactly. The authors were referring to those who are normal, but have what are technically called “body image disturbances” due to media propaganda and marketed ideas of “fashion”.

A friend of mine gets a lot of magazines for free including gossip rags. One of the typical features is comparing two female celebrities wearing the same dress and then deciding who wore it best. Another shows different celebrities, usually female, and pointing out their “flaws”: the cellulite, how one has -oh my God!- gained weight and another is criticized because she’s too thin. One rag showed a woman wearing a bikini leaning over while sitting and her abdomen was bunched up and was accompanied by a comment about her belly and suggested she was letting herself go. That’s what skin does! When the people who are held up as the ideal are torn down how I don’t know how young women and men can be inoculated against weird body issues.
