Life after death??

As Catholics do we believe in “life after death” or “the dead are dead and know nothing”??
I would love to know the church’s teaching.

Look no further than the Nicene Creed:

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

We believe in life after death.
 
Is this a question raised by your Adventist companion? If so, the former Adventists on this forum might have much more to say with regards to the proper way to refute his position.

Dead, as in not alive…as in my father is dead and buried…a genuine physical death, not a spiritual death

As Catholics we believe a few things about afterlife:
  1. There IS an afterlife, and it consists of Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell. We will ALL go to one or 2 of these places with the exception of Hell, to which if we are sentenced there we are there for eternity.
  2. God created us in his image with an immortal soul. We are designed to live forever, not physically, but spiritually. As members of the Body of Christ, we remain immortal and this is why we pray to the Saints because they are alive in Christ.
  3. We believe in the resurrection of the body. This does not refer to the Body of Christ as in those of us who are alive in him, but in the physical body. We believe that when Christ returns, the dead will be raised and restored, and glorified.
Regarding this, if you review the catechism (sorry, couldn’t find a good online link), you will see that this is why although cremation is allowed, it is required that the ashes of the deceased be treated with respect, kept whole and buried, rather than to be scattered at sea.

I know people with more knowledge will give a better and more complete answer and hopefully someone can provide a link to the catechism!
