Many Christians wholeheartedly believe that life has no meaning without God, not just any God, but the Christian God.

All of you who believe life without the Christian God would be meaningless, I ask you this;

" Would your life have been meaningless if you had been born in the year 10,000, 50,000 or 100,000 B.C?"

Serious question, as millions of humans lived upon the earth for many thousands of years before Judaism, let alone Christianity, had even begun.

You’re saying that life has meaning without the knowledge of God, not the existence of God. A Christian would likely argue that God was supporting the esteem of mankind without their knowing.

Like artificial life support? Wow, do Christians really believe that is how mankind survived, with divine life support from a God that did not reveal himself for somewhere around the first 198,000 years of human existence?

Christians believe that the universe, all other possible universes, and everything and everyone in all of them continue to exist in this moment because God actively wills it.

Being is not a non-necessary quality of a thing which, when found, can only be ascribed to an outside cause. See also Thomas Aquinas.

Do you find this disturbing?

What do you think the Church teaches on this matter?

I don’t really know, as I’m not Christian. I was just acting as a muse, really.

You may want to watch your tone around here–you don’t seem to be what members here would call “charitable”.

I’m not getting bogged down in off topic side posts. Just looking for these Christians who insist life has no meaning without the Christian God.

I’ve God one, albeit odd, answer so far, a kind of artificial divine life support to get early man through the first two hundred thousand years until Christ came.

Oh. I don’t think you’ll find such a person among the Catholics. No one outside the Faith will have a full understanding of truth, but partial understanding was neither closed to nor unattainable to the ancients–it was just a bit more difficult.

We wouldn’t base so much of our philosophy on Greek ideas if we didn’t see meaning in life outside the Church, after all. 🙂

So, that being settled, would you like to head back to those side topics?

I propose to answer your question my own way.

If there is no God, no heaven, no eventual justice in the next life,
then what do you tell the fat, ugly, penniless , drooling, incontinent girl trapped in a wheelchair?
" Live for today. " ? :nope:

what do you tell the registered sex offender, who made one mistake, who will be outcast and persecuted no matter what he does, or does not, do , forever after ?
with no God, no heaven, no eventual justice, he cannot even commit suicide to end his suffering, for under such an assumption death is the end of everything, the solution to nothing.

What do you tell the intellectual who has the bad luck to be born in Russia in 1914, fated to live out his existence in a state where he will always be subject to the bigotry of stevedors and cab drivers?

Even IF we suppose that Christianity is a made up fiction, is there something better?
I like what Goethe said , " If they ( the apostles ) were great enough to invent such a story, then the least we can do is be great enough to believe it. "

I think you’d tell them that life isn’t fair and to get over it. If there’s no God, misery happens. If there is a God, misery happens. And, generally speaking, it still isn’t very fair.

Playing Devil’s Advocate here.

Yes, I know you are just playing devil’s advocate. 🙂
But I thought the point of my examples was that in some cases, in many cases, there is no, " getting over it. "
Yep, life isn’t fair – that’s exactly why we needed to invent christianity , assuming it was invented, which I do not think.
The genuis imbedded in the idea is evidence of its divine origin.

That’s not off topic. I’m asking you what Christians believe about this. It’s in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I doesn’t seem like you are aware of what Christians believe.

Oh. I don’t think you’ll find such a person among the Catholics.
I created this thread, because I’m being told this very thing by Catholics in another thread. Those same Catholics, are choosing not to answer my question, even though I’m being reminded that life without the Christian God has no meaning.

Hence my question, ’ what of those born the 198,000 years before Christ, did their lives have no meaning without Judaism or Christianity?

Remember, many, if not all of these humans, worshiped other Gods. Did they get meaning from their lives by worshiping the mighty Zeus or Bal?

I don’t think human life goes back that far, despite what many in the sciences might argue. But as far as human life does goes back to, I’d definitely say life has no meaning without God. The moment humans were created they had a infinite attraction for God and truth. He is after all our father and creator. Who wouldn’t have this attraction?

Please, what are you basing this misinformed opinion on, as it is certainly not an opinion that is based upon science, anthropology, geology or archeology.

I don’t buy into this notion of man descending from apes. I read all of Darwins books in a class devoted to the Darwinian revolution, got an A, and didn’t agree with it in my paper. Show me a decent “missing link” then we’ll talk. We read the book called “Lucy” that was supposed to be about the “missing link” and it was not convincing in the least. Neither is PBS… All PBS does is build on the trend of science toward the evolutionary theory of Darwin. I am bright and don’t just go with the floods of pepole who seem to agree with it.

There are a multitude of transitional fossils, which of course, you fail to appreciate or acknowledge.

The Theory of evolution is an observable fact.

What are you basing your opinion on? Please answer my question.

If you care to educate yourself, follow the link. If not, and your content to remain in your bubble, then ignore it.

I took an intermediate level college course specifically on the Darwinian revolution, got an A and read all Darwin’s material and Johanson’s book on Lucy, the supposed missing link at the time. I continue to look at the evidence on PBS and can only accept a theory of evolution that includes natural selection without this profligate idea of man sharing common ancestrey with apes. There are different theories of evolution and mine does not include common ancestry with apes, and I know perfectly well how convincing it may be to people like yourself. According to a Mensa test I am a genius and I know I am not stupid. I might appear so to you because I don’t buy into the trends in science, but I will not argue on the matter.
