Life Teen mass abuses - invalid mass?

The original post had concern about the mass for Lifeteen. Sure it was mostly about teens being around the alter, but doesn’t that also affect the rest of the mass?

Yes, it does. It goes across the board, and, music is certainly one aspect that also falls under this category.

The OP stated that the teens gathering around the altar was the only abuse still happening at his parish. So, maybe we should stick to the original question. But I know that’s difficult here, so rant on…

BTW, who constitutes what sacred music is? Is it not possible to praise God with an electric guitar, or a set of drums? Is the pipe organ the only sacred instrument there is? I think the issue with music has to do more with personal taste than anything else, even with the Bishops and Cardinals. Let’s not forget we are talking about a group of older men who come from a different time. No disrespect intended, but I have the right to disagree with them.

Anyway, forgive me, I should know better than to question the authorities here where the my way or the highway gang reside. I’m going back to my corner now…

Please stick to the OP’s topic, everyone. There are plenty of existing threads about liturgical music. Thank you.

We have a wonderful Life Teen Mass here where I live. Very reverent. Very spiritual. I don’t see anything that resembles abuse.

The kids that are involved in Life Teen here are soooooo involved. It makes me feel good to see young people so interested in their Catholic faith.

“…you can make all of the arguments that you want, but the music at LifeTeen is certainly not appropriate for the Mass.”

I have not heard the music from this mass but if it is rock music written for a Mass what is wrong with that? If you would ever hear the music from a mass from Africa or New Guinea “in the bush”, you might be surprised. Drums and rhythm instruments and “calling out with response” in beautiful native harmony, well if you are not familiar with it, you might be shocked. Yet doesn’t scripture say “make a joyful noise unto the Lord”? I have seen teen retreats change young peoples lives from sin to holiness. Much healing can occur when we meet young people at their level; which may include “music” which may seem shocking to us.

That may be true, but in some cases, especially with electronic music and amplified drums, the music becomes entertainment. When it appeals to the flesh more than uplifting the spirit, the very purpose is defeated. Mass is not suppose to be entertainment. And musicians are supposed to be ministers, not performers.

Agreed, except in naming the drummer as entertainment. My couple of drummers are among the most prayerful people I know (one played for the pope when he came here). He is absolutely NOT performing, and his function is to fill to the chorus so the congregation sings louder. Much more of a ministry than the organist (at another parish) that called the bishop a bad name because the bishop didn’t compliment the organist by name publicly for his “performance” at mass.

I’m not arguing whether drumming is approrpiate for mass or not, so no need for anyone to chime in here on that. My point is that drums do NOT equal “performance” or “concert”. That is a personal filter that people have.

I agree, and that’s why I cannot attend a Mass with Gregorian Chant. It’s pure entertainment for me. I love it, but cannot participate with it. I attend out Life Teen Mass, which has music that is done beautifully and reverently. I can participate in the music, and it leads me deeper into worship. And, it includes drums, electric guitar, bass guitar, and often electric keyboard and piano.

It also seems that LifeTeen is going down the same road as the Neocatechumenal Movement. They were given a two-year moratorium, that was supposed to have expired in December, 2007, to cease and desist their strange liturgical practices. Unfortunately, from what I could tell on Holy Thursday (when visiting my Cathedral), they hadn’t quite gotten the message.

The bottom line is that the Mass is not anyone’s own personal property to do with as he pleases. It is something we receive from the Church, who, in turn, has received it from her Divine Spouse.
FYI: the mass has always been changing ever since Jesus established it. The various Eastern rites are a proof of this. LT needs a theologian and liturgists in order to guide them into what can/can’t be changed. This is their mistake. To change things for what ‘feels’ right not based on historic/theological facts. As far as the Neocatechumenal Way and their liturgy, the fact that 170 bishops recently declared their support, together with a greeting from the Pope, the secretary of State (Bertone), plus the presence of Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes, and Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko, president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity… it all indicates a tacit support for their liturgies… I believe that their modifications on the mass are solidly founded on scripture/history/theology.

I’ve often wondered when I read posts expressing love for Gregorian Chant, if that isn’t truly the case, that it’s spiritual “entertainment” for some of those in attendence. What a wonderful analogy.
