Life without alcohol

I am scared that I will not be able to enjoy life sober.
Are there any things in life you enjoy whist being sober? When you remove alcohol and face that awful fear/anxiety/boredom/anger…etc…you need to do something you enjoy. Is there a hobby you always wanted to take up but never got round to it? And are there stressful triggers that you need to cut out? When you remove something you enjoy, you have to replace it with something else, otherwise you just feel resentful and like you’re missing out. With the money you would spend on alcohol, instead use that money to buy yourself something nice, or to pay for an evening at the movies with your wife, or a lovely toy for your child. Remember aswell that when you are sober, you can drive, so that’s a plus. Try to focus on all the positives of sobriety. You do also need prayer. And you need to realize the fact that alcoholism kills people. It’s very dangerous. It destroys marriages, children’s lives, and can lead to financial ruin. If your son was 18 and drinking and asked for your advice, what would you tell him? Think about that. If he told you he thought he was too young for AA, what would you say to him? If he was worried he wouldn’t enjoy life without alcohol, what would you say to him? It’s not your fault that you’re alcoholic, it’s never anyone’s fault, people don’t choose to be alcoholics, but the fact is, you are. And you will always be.
The Serenity Prayer:

God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The Courage to change the things I can
And the Wisdom to know the difference~

God Bless

I was just reading this old thread. Today I am 97 days sober, and it is my 35th Birthday. It is not easy, and yes I miss the buzz. But, I am taking each day as it comes. Last year at this time I would have drank about 15 beers on my Birthday, today I had Iced Tea. It still embarrasss me that I am an alcoholic, but I have to get over the regrets.

Congratulations. I will pray for your continued sobriety.

Congratulations!!! Fantastic, I am glad you have chosen sobriety and maintained it. Can I ask if you are going to AA meetings?

Not in AA, but working with a therapist. I am also reading and posting a lot on soberrecovery.com.
That’s just wonderful. Not everyone needs or benefits from AA. It’s there if you ever need it, but I’m glad you’ve found a way to recover that works for you.

👍
