I went to my first “lifeteen” mass last night. It was different in ways I hadn’t expected. I was surprised when the music during communion was accompanied by very loud drums. Is this the norm for a lifeteen mass?

In my experience the drums and louder music is normal, except during communion our lifeteen service always made it a point to play soft music appropriate for meditation (meaning no drums or shouting etc). I’m pretty surprised they’d be playing the louder music for communion. I don’t think I would like it very much and personally don’t find it very appropriate.

I was involved in Lifeteen when I was in highschool and the music during communion was usually a little bit more reverent. I don’t recall there ever being drums. It was usually some type of slow praise and worship music accompanied by guitars and piano. But drums were certainly used in other parts of the liturgy :whacky: . The group I was with was very good at promoting Eucharistic and Marian devotion with the teens. I seriously question the necessity of bringing “secular” elements into the Mass to appeal to a younger crowd and when I was there, there were a few things Lifeteen did that were definately abuses. I haven’t been to one in several years so I don’t know if those are still happening.

While I personally don’t like the drums in Mass at all, I figure that’s just a matter of personal taste. But I was appalled at the drums and the loudness of them during Communion. They were loud enough that when my daughter tried to whisper something to me, I couldn’t hear her. She had to speak out loud in a low tone. I found it to be tasteless.

I have never been to a lifeteen Mass, but in my church my own brother plays the drumset. He is very good at it and shows it through the gift which God gave him, but he is also very reverent. In the more upbeat songs he dos play quite loud, but not to the extent that it is distracting, but during communion, the songs are more relaxed.
The one time I found the music a little too much for me was actually at one of the teen conferences sponsored by Steubenville. (And this saying a lot since the music in my church already has a contemporary style). It was not during a mass but during Eucharistic adoration. At one point the music was very light, but then they started to play some praise and worship songs. It might have helped others, but I found it more difficult to focus on Christ when the guitars and drumsets were blaring.
