As a new youth ministry coordinator, I have been going through a ton of books, videos, etc. that accumulated over the last couple of decades in our parish office. I have come across nearly 20 Life Teen videotapes, mostly dating around 2000. Obviously a former youth ministry leader had the parish enrolled at that time. It was before the allegations of molestation and abuse against founder Dale Fushek started surfacing, and was of course well before his excommunication and defrocking. My question for other coordinators and religious education leaders isn’t whether I should dispose of the tapes, once our pastor approves- that’s a given, since they all seem to feature Fushek and as far as I’m concerned, they are tainted by his hypocrisy and perversion. My question is for those who are working in parishes where Life Teen is still used- and there of course many, as well as those whose parishes have never used or who have dropped Life Teen.
- If you have a long history of using Life Teen, how did your parish react/adjust after Fushek’s removal from the priesthood? Have there been lingering effects?
- What do you feel about the current direction of Life Teen?
- What pristine alternatives to Life Teen are there? (I’m not particularly interested in Kairos, which is more academically based anyway).
