Lifting Reserved-To-The-Vatican Excommunication?

I drifted away from Catholicism into some very dark territory. During this time, I willingly and knowingly committed sins that carry a Latae Sententiae penalty of the sort that’s reserved to the Holy See. (I should stress this isn’t a scruple. I stole and desecrated a consecrated host, partly because I knew the act would result in my automatic excommunication.)

I’m not quite ready to return to the fold and to confession, but I do seem to be heading in that direction, and want to be prepared. I believe the usual form is to confess and then be asked to return later when the priest has had time to consult the Holy See. Will the average parish priest know this, or should I be trying to to find a specific person in the diocese who deals with such matters?

Many thanks.

Most priests should know this, but mileage may vary. You should call your Diocesan office and ask to speak to someone in the office of the Judicial Vicar, and if you can, the JV himself. That’s the surest way to get ahold of someone with that kind of knowledge.

Pray and trust in God’s mercy. Welcome home.

You are in my prayers.
