Last night I had the idea of lighting a candle before my crucifix and praying before I go to sleep. I was wondering is there anything that I could say/do that could help the candle with its spiritual meaning? Like lighting the candle and stating that it represents Christ being the light in a world of darkness. I know this question is kind of general, but I would also like to hear how others use candles in their spiritual/prayer life. I also have also admired the red sanctuary lamp beside the tabernacle as it is sort of like a sign saying “the doctor is in” haha.

Nothing wrong with that. I keep a red votive burning at my home altar. Before I go to bed I make a mental prayerful resolution that, as I sleep, I sit at the feet of the Master to keep Him company by the light of the sanctuary candle at the tabernacle.

I light a candle at my small home alter. usually I try and match the candle with certain colours of certain meaning within the faith. I am usually as definite as asking the light of a candle to be a beacon of all that is good kind proper and right in the universe that it may find it’s way into my home via this light and the light of the candle is to represent Christ. 😊 idk I may leave it burn for a bit but feel it inappropriate to do so while not technically using the small alter. Also fire is a sacred element and deserves respect so don’t leave one burning all night if you are not having a vigil. Untended candles can burn houses down.

Wonderful. You should get them blessed! And read Scripture passages, or prayers, or poems, that allude to light. Your Savior is ‘lumen’ over you!
