I feel like I would like to light a candle in my home.I was wondering if there was a special kind of candle I should use and a special holder to put it in?
It’s the faith in your heart God sees, the external isn’t important. However, we should give the best and most beautiful to God, so there’s no reason why setting aside a special candle holder would be a bad idea.
Also,I noticed at the grocery store, there are candles with pictures of certain saints like St. Michael and a prayer on the back in English/Spanish.Would those be okay?
I love those. They’re fine. If the prayer on the back doesn’t sum up what you’re trying to say, use your own.
Also, do you have to get the candle blessed? Thanks for all of your help.🙂
You don’t have to, but there’s no reason why not, if your priest is willing to do so.

thank you for the corrected article link!

i am a relatively new catholic (April 2006), but as a child i lived with my grandmother herself a convert to the catholic faith. we would takes walks every day and whatever catholic church we passed we always went in lit a candle and said a prayer for someone, usually friend or someone my gram knew was in need. she taught me so much about “intercessory” prayer long before i ever knew anything about it. it is now one of my “callings” as a catholic. at my parish we did not have the votive candles (i thought all catholic churches had them) for me it was a personal connection to my gram and my new faith. well at Christmas 2006 our parish life director purchased a set of votive candles for us to use daily!!! i felt strongly that God had answered my prayers. i go often to light a candle for prayers for souls, friends, family. i also light candles at home i try to remember every day as a light of hope and rememberance…ie I will leave the light on for the returning members the family like our troops currently… i light one every day my son in law is deployed, etc.
just today i thought i should ask my priest if i should have my house and quiet corner blessed… I’ll do that next week!

There are many available. My favorite is at churchcandlesforless.com/. Check with your parish to see if any are available for sale.

My wife is the church secretary and says those grocery store candles are poor quality: they release a lot of soot and fumes that some parishioners are allergic to; the glass used for these votives are prone to cracking when heated. For these reasons, the insurance company recommends not allowing these for use in the church.

I buy my candle refills from the church across town. These fit my votive globe nicely.

I was thinking about going to a Catholic site like you suggested,JGuerra. They have some really nice things on there. Thanks for everybody’s help.

:heaven:

Nobody has heard the symbolic nature of candles?

The wax, the wick, and the flame: The Son, the Father, and the Holy Ghost.

The wax is usually beeswax because bees are ‘virgins’ who produce it and it looksl like flesh, so the flesh born of the virgins. This represents the Son.

The wick is the heart of the candle, in the center of the wax, as the Father is the heart and soul of the Son. It also flows through all three and unites them, and it is the ‘creator’ of the wax (wax builds on the wick to create the candle).

The flame, of course, is the Holy Ghost, as it is His symbol and burns from the wax and wick ("who proceeds from the Father and the Son).

The candle burns as a stand in for yourself. Even if you cannot stay to pray, the candle burns as a symbolic gesture of your continued needs and intentions. That is why we light candles.

At least, that’s how it was always explained to me. 🤷

There is a section on candles here: fisheaters.com/fire.html
