‘In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist ’ the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained.’ (Para. 1374)

Lightly stepping around the table of the Lord…on the road to Ecumenical harmony, I have to admit that this one thing really stumbles me both from a religious and scientific point of view.

From a religious point of view, my mind keeps saying this is a form of Pantheism, that is not part of Christianity at all and from a scientific point of view I find my brain insulted to wonder what sort of natural laws would have to be violated in order to accept that crumbs could be changed into a man, let alone the Lord Jesus Christ, the Alpha and Omega.

Lightly stepping around the table of the Lord, for when we come to His table, what do we see.

Mount Zion…the city of the living God…the heavenly Jerusalem…innumerable angels…the general assembly and church of the firstborn…God the judge of all…the spirits of just men made perfect…Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of the sprinkling, that speaketh better than the blood of Abel.

On the day when Jesus died, it says the graves were opened and the firstborn were resurrected, but also that the veil in the temple was torn from top to bottom, a thick curtain behind which the High Priest would go … to do , what was now completed upon the cross when Jesus said, ‘It is finished’, He had made atonement, one offering, completed and we know where the Son of God now sits, every living to make intercession, never needing to shed blood again and again, He is the High Priest of the order of Melchizedek.

So lightly we must tread in the Presense of God Almighty and the Lamb and look to our thoughts and that we partake of the cup and the bread, which was broken a symbol of the veil that was torn, his flesh, torn so that we may go in, the blood which was shed for the remission of sins, so that we may with reverance but boldness enter in behind the veil that was rent to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God which is our acceptable worship. To stand before the He who sits upon the throne, and bow low. How have we come to this place by eating bread and drinking wine, or by what these symbolize, the actual blood of Jesus Christ that was shed not now, or yesterday, but on a specific date in History…when His body was harshly treated by each of us, who are his called, his children, and lending our blows, our sins that have done this to him, He reaches out a nail scarred hand and says, not eat it, but touch and see…it is me, be at peace, do not fear…

So lightly we tread at the table of the Lord, to reach out our hearts and minds and souls to receive what He paid for in full, not one drop was shy of the mark, not one scar or pulled hair from his beard were shy of the mark, that we cannot of ourselves reach…

He it is who fills the innermost being, that a cup of wine could not, he it is who fills the innermost being with His Spirit, He the bread of life, who was broken and now coming to Him first we are able to be filled by the Spirit of Christ. If filled never to thirst again, if filled never to hunger again…

So lightly we tread when we consider that we are bowing now before God who Jesus said, is Spirit and they who worship must do so in spirit and truth. Truthful we know that He cannot be in a leaf, or a butterfly, for He was manifest in the flesh, and this confession we know is the truth, that Jesus Christ came in the flesh…we are not cannibals who will attempt to imagine we are actually eating his physical body and drinking his physical blood, but His words are the words of life and so we are able to remember Him who is in us by His word, born by the word of God and the Spirit and proclaiming His death until He returns in the same way He did…

So lightly we settle down as if carried by angels wings to the presense of the one who now bears the scars of our sicknesses and sins and by his once shed blood and torn body, ever lives to make intercession. He is our High Priest, but not like those who went before who had to make offerings time and again, He offered Himself, ironic, … yes, ironic. He offered Himself for us.

Lightly we settle at His feed and take what He has blessed us with in this life and pour forth our thanks over and over for what He has done, which we could not because … we know Him who was slain, and whose blood was presented through the eternal Spirit.

Lightly we wait upon His words, ‘My child come and drink and eat of the table that I have prepared for you from the foundation of the world. I was slain and now you need not die, and by my stripes you shall be made whole, come Child, come not to the symbols, but see me and come to me, your Saviour and Deliverer.’

So lightly we go…to Him. Amen.

You’re not the only disciple of Jesus who stumbled over the Eucharist.

*John 6:60 Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” … 6:64 But there are some of you that do not believe." For Jesus knew from the first who those were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray him. 6:65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” 6:66 After this many of his disciples drew back and no longer went about with him. *

I pray the Father will grant you the grace to come to Our Lord in the Eucharist; that you will choose not to join those who do not believe, who draw back and do not go about with Him anymore - because the teaching is beyond our human capacity to comprehend.

I pray rather that you will join Peter and the other apostles (excepting Judas), who believed because of a strong faith in who Jesus is, in the truth of what He declares, and in His power to accomplish what He declares.

*John 6:67 Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?” 6:68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; 6:69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” *

I pray you’ll consider very seriously which group you will choose to accompany.

🤷 Nita,

Do his words not offend you, so that you would leave out crucial one’s that bring light to one’s heart and mind.

Allow me: (from the Duo Rheims Bible 1899)

Joh 6:61 (6:62) But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said to them: Doth this scandalize you?
Joh 6:62 (6:63) If then you shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
Joh 6:63 (6:64) It is the spirit that quickeneth: the flesh profiteth nothing. **The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. **

To whom shall we go. To the Eucharist or to the High Priest of our confession ?

While you are about it would perhaps reading back a bit to get the context of John 3…living water…the Spirit…living bread… ??? The Spirit of Christ.
Joh 6:35 And Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life. He that cometh to me shall not hunger: and he that believeth in me shall never thirst.
I am stepping lightly around, not past the table…looking at the bread and the wine and trying to understand what I am told is one thing by one and another thing by another, but Jesus is teaching in the Gospel of John, so I am trying to embrace His understanding and therefore not losing the thread of His inspiration…so come with me Nita and let us wonder about this idea of Pantheism, and Scientific nonesense…and then reason a bit in our hearts as well as our minds and see if we understand Jesus better…

Okay? 👍

transubstantiation is not an easy thing to get your head around.
actually it is impossible to get your head around it.

but it is no more mystifying then the fact that He was born of a virgin.

it is no more appalling to reason than the fact that He is both completely divine and completely human.

it is no more beyond our comprehension then the fact that He was raised on the third day.

The only explanation is that he is God, and that we are not.
Do not let yourself put Him into the tiny box of science.
If you believe that He is almighty and omnipotent then how is anything outside of His ability.

that is not to say that wondering and questioning are not good. He made us to want an understanding of him.
But know that he is God.

The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

why did Jesus not stop disciples from leaving if he did mean it literally?

I think he meant that the spirit quickeneth: trust to God and spiritual things beyond comprehension.
and that the flesh profiteth nothing: our limited human reasoning means nothing

you can make words to fit any meaning… that is why we have a place of Authority here on earth to help us understand the words.

The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
👍

Now if Jesus meant that we should eat his actual body and blood, then why did use so many words to describe something that has resulted in mountains of bodies, piled to the sky. If we make the command literal…eat me, body and blood; then we will have ignored the context of the entire book of John, and the full body of Jesus teaching, that God is Spirit, and they who worship Him must do so in spirit and truth ? The eating is simply done by coming to Jesus, and the drinking is done by simply believing in Him. John 6:35 And Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life. He that cometh to me shall not hunger: and he that believeth in me shall never thirst. The whole point of the Gospel of John is summarized in one passage of Scripture…

John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Do you understand ?

I didn’t leave out verses that were crucial *to the point I was trying **to make *- specifically, to show that it caused others, besides you, to stumble when they heard them.

The disciples that left Jesus heard all those words in the verses you gave in your post. They heard Him say “The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” and they knew He wasn’t telling them that “body and blood” was just a metaphor for “spirit and life”. That’s why they still left. Had it just been a metaphor they’d have had no problem.

Okay, I’ll come with you Pophead. We’ll listen together to Our Lord’s words in John 6. I’ll be just as puzzled as you when He says He is the bread of life and I must eat His flesh and drink His blood if I wish to have eternal life. I’ll accept it because it is Jesus who says it. But I’ll be thinking, " What on earth do you mean Lord? How, Lord, can I possibly eat your flesh and drink your blood?

Are you still with me Pophead? Because now I’m at the Last Supper and Jesus has just picked up bread - real bread, not metaphoric bread - and He holds it up, looks at me, looks at you, and says (with the same Divine power as His words at creation) - “This is My Body; Take and eat.” “This is My Blood; Take and drink”. Now I know the How.

The words He spoke are spirit and life - His Spirit and His life - for His Spirit and life are bound together forever with His resurrected and glorified body and blood. It the entirety of Our risen Lord, ascended into heaven, that we receive under the outward appearances of bread and wine.

Re pantheism. I know what pantheism is, but what in the world it has to do with John 6 is beyond me. Would you please explain why you think Our Lord is speaking about pantheism in these verses? Believe me, we Catholics do not genuflect as we walk down the bread aisle in the grocery store - if that’s what you’re hinting at.

I pray the day will come when you’ll get tired of stepping lightly around the table and yearn to join us - for it is the Lord’s table, and it’s a heavenly banquet.

Dear Nita,

Thank-you for your reply. I spent some time last night (your day) just putting together a set of verses for you.

First let’s look at some of the Para’s…and then see if you can understand what is called the key of knowledge, granted to those who drink of the Spirit. (not blood and body.)

Enjoy… 🙂

‘By the same charity, that it enkindles in us, the Eucharist preserves us from future mortal sins’ (Para. 1395)

‘The Holy Communion separates us from sin. The body of Christ we receive in Holy Communion is ‘given up for us’ and the blood we drink ‘shed for many for the forgiveness of sins’ For this reason the Eucharist cannot unite us to Christ without at the same time cleansing us from past sins and preserving us from future sins.’ (Para. 1393)

Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Ephesians 2:

13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

1 Corinthians 6:

17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:

13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

continued in the next thread.

continued…

Dear Nita,

Now maybe you will understand why I am stepping lightly. Join me as we continue to step lightly and look at what we are to be eating… (His words)…even St Peter understood this.

👍

ONE OFFERING, ONCE.

Hebrews 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

Romans 6:10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

Hebrews 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Hebrews 9:

24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;

26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Hebrews 7:27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

Jesus is not the victim, He is the victor!

John 10:17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

Hebrews 8:1 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;

Hebrews 10:18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

Hebrews 6:

4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

Hebrews 10:

26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

28 He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

THE FRUIT OF THE VINE – NOT BLOOD

Matthew 26:

27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;

28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.

Mark 14:

24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

25 Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

CONSIDER THE TEMPTER REQUIRES MAGIC, BUT GOD REQUIRES WE EAT HIS WORDS, NOT HIS BLOOD AND BODY. FOR THEY ARE SPIRIT AND THEY ARE LIFE.

Matthew 4:

2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

A careful, prayerful read of John 6:25-7 1 will be helpful if as Jesus said, ‘The Father has revealed these things unto you (babes)…’ but others in their religious manners have taken from them the key of knowledge……

John 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

👍

To me it’s simple. Paul speaks of people needing to discern and worthily partake of the Body and Blood of Jesus - that to not do so brought not only their own damnation upon them but physical illness and death. More than that, that those who did so were guilty of the Body and Blood of the Lord.

None of this makes any sense if the Eucharist is merely symbolic or anything less than real. Symbols have force, sure, but the power of PHYSICAL illness and death? Such power that to approach them unworthily brings damnation upon those who do? Absolutely not. Only if the Eucharist is the reality of the Body and Blood of Our Lord does this warning from Paul make sense.

To me it’s simple.
Of course it is simple LilyM. The key of knowledge is very simple, however it is found in Jesus Christ, not in eating his body and blood. His words are spirit and life, and if you come to Him and believe on Him, then you will never thirst or hunger again.

You are only expressing what has been said already.
John 6:35 And Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life. He that **cometh to me **shall not hunger: and **he that believeth in me **shall never thirst.
The whole point of the Gospel of John is summarized in one passage of Scripture…
John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
Do you [not] understand ?
There is quite a bit to think about in my previous two entries…the fruit of the vine, one offering etc. link 1 link 2

Step lightly sister, there is much upon the table that needs to be considered. I do mean the heavenly table, before the risen Son of God, who sits at the right hand of the Father. The High Priest, who ever lives to make intercession on behalf of His children.

Remember if you do not have the Spirit of Christ, you are none of His.

:tiphat: ‘Good day’

There is only one truth.

Either Christ meant for us to eat His body and Drink his blood… or he did not.

You can quote bible verses to deny it, I can quote them to confirm it.
The bible is just words. We give those words meaning, by reading them and trying to understand them. Why would Jesus leave us with just a book! So that each man could read it, interpret what it means and then argue with his brothers? Surely Jesus, who is God, in his infinite wisdom must have designed something else.

That is why I’m glad the Church exists. I’d rather trust to the interpretation of those with Apostolic succession then those without it!

Surely Jesus, who is God, in his infinite wisdom must have designed something else.
The promise of the Father.

I have often wondered about stuff like that. Imagine a world with no Bible, no Church, no particularly well informed induviduals…as the years pass us by, we get to realize that under the sun, not many wise guys here.

Jesus did do something so wonderful for us. He made it possible that no matter how dismal things would get we had an internal compass, His Spirit. What I love is that you can ask stuff like this and He will answer you most directly. He knew loneliness that we cannot imagine, and so is able to comfort us. A faithful High Priest.

Shalom.

“He made it possible that no matter how dismal things would get we had an internal compass, His Spirit.”

How can we be sure it is really Him telling us?

How could he tell two different people two different things?

Isn’t there only one Truth?

Jesus is the Truth, and it is absolute. Isn’t it possible to misunderstand the Truth that Jesus gives you through the Spirit… otherwise how could two people come up with two versions of Truth?

How are you sure yours is right?

CONSIDER THE TEMPTER REQUIRES MAGIC, BUT GOD REQUIRES WE EAT HIS WORDS, NOT HIS BLOOD AND BODY. FOR THEY ARE SPIRIT AND THEY ARE LIFE.
Check that against Luke 22:

15 And he said to them: With desire I have desired to eat this pasch with you, before I suffer. 16 For I say to you, that from this time I will not eat it, till it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. 17 And having taken the chalice, he gave thanks, and said: Take, and divide it among you: 18 For I say to you, that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, till the kingdom of God come. 19 And taking bread, he gave thanks, and brake; and gave to them, saying: This is my body, which is given for you. Do this for a commemoration of me. 20 In like manner the chalice also, after he had supped, saying: This is the chalice, the new testament in my blood, which shall be shed for you.

“He made it possible that no matter how dismal things would get we had an internal compass, His Spirit.” (Pophead)
How can we be sure it is really Him telling us?
Great question. My sheep hear my voice. I am not to sure about the habits of sheep, but if one is willing to really listen, He really helps you to know it is Him.
johnshelby said:
How could he tell two different people two different things?
Well, that might be a problem if it was just a person speaking, but I love Jesus’ answer, the words I say are the Father speaking. If you have His Spirit in you, and you are listening, you will be able to say with St. Peter, to whom shall we go for you have the words of life, there is a quality and dimensionality to His words. I am sure that there are many slips twixt the cup and the lip. Hence, we get so many different denominations and each one built on a unique idea. Put them all together and maybe we will really see the Lord a lot clearer. Tolerance is obviously an area where all humans struggle…
johnshelby said:
Isn’t there only one Truth?
There is certainly only one who is true, but there are truths and truths and true truths etc. Our problem is that we tend to see things uni/dual/tri-dimensional…but when you have heard the voice of the Lord, you will understand why St. John and St. Daniel (the prophet) said his voice was as the sound of many water/voices. I mean like for example I have had many faithful friends but the faithfulness in the greatest of all friends, Jesus, is very hard to mistake, once you have heard Him.

Hi Wollie,…(the rest)
johnshelby said:

Oh, I think that is once again, so unique. We are definitely prone to error and I guess that is just part of being a sinner. We know in part, we prophecy in part. We see through a mirror, we do not get it all, even if we could get all wisdom, all knowledge and speak with the tongues of men and angels, we will still screw up and argue and differ. The idea of a perfect church is definitely the biggest of lies, everyone has their problems and if the don’t, look out for the reality check. History has a record but how easily we forget the terrible errors in judgment, in the name of God. It is nevertheless true that the Lord has throughout History had those who have spoken for Him. The idea that some have that the Bible is finished and therefore there is going to be no more revelation. Close cannon, or our Church has the final revelation, or the only truth, is proposterous. The idea that one person…like say…Dr Francis Schaeffer had all the truth, is nuts…same with St. Augustine…these guys even admitted that they did not know a lot of stuff, and some stuff they were completely puzzled about. However, one thing is for certain, the Spirit of Christ will open your eyes at the right time to see and hear what you need to too grow closer to Him. It is just how this all works, a marvellously wonderful Lord.

His words, ‘Take my yoke upon me and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you shall find rest to your souls.’ I have always found that he works with the clay he has, and as we open up he shows a little more and a little more, our problem is we get so excited that we take a little light and start a movement…it is just that idea of what happened on the mount of transfiguration…they wanted to build little temples…the saw Jesus in His Majesty and Elijah and Moses and wanted to freeze time…I think a lot of the time, he peals back a layer, and we go oooo kewl…and then freeze in amazement, and don’t realize that like that olde onion there are many layers, before we reach absolute pure light.
johnshelby said:
How are you sure yours is right?
I hope you undestand from what I wrote above. I do not believe that mine is right, I am just growning and learning every day. The Lord is so incredibly deep that it would take a billion, billion light years to get my mind completely around His. I like the part where the Scriptures say, His thoughts are far above our thoughts. Occassionally, he lets something through. I guess it is the same way I read Scripture. I have been reading and listening to the Gospel of John regularly for quite a few years now. It is my favourite…happened quite by chance…I was entertaining and guests were watching televison in the living room, I was recording the Gospel of John from tape to tape, and going in and out of my room and the living room, I clean forgot what I was recording, eventually I convinced myself it was the book of Romans, you know St Pauls book…well, I was standing there trying to see when the tape would end to stop it and turn it at the right place and all the while I am listening to this thinking this is Paul…and he is saying some pretty authoritive stuff, I think…in my mind…I think wow, he is pretty authoritive…so I say that out loud, Wow what authority…and the I hear, ‘Jesus said.’ and suddenly I am back on earth with really heavy reality check…I mean I had a totally objective moment, not aware it was Jesus and my mind got around the style of his speak and I admit I felt just like the crowd at the end of the Sermon of the Mount…whew…gobbstopped, awestruck, and well and truely blown away by the words of Jesus, so from that day I just kept listening sometimes to and from school collecting the boys…and I have never got tired of it…As he said, ‘my words are spirit and life’, you can literally eat them over and over and there is never a boring moment. I admit in the beginning some of the heavy stuff would really mess with me, and just held on tight and let him take on the ride of my life. What ever devils stuff was in me has been rattled and hummed right out of me.

I guess this has also helped me to recognize His voice. I have a little commentary written by a layman who spent fifty years studying the book of Hebrews. Wow. At the end he said, I have only begun to scratch the surface.

What is your favourite book…or bible book…?

It is nearly 1am, so it is time to say goodnight…I am always pretty amped after my gig…I play on a Friday at the local…so this is the time I normally watch a movie and then child…got Jet Li and the movie called Fearless…I hope it does not terrify me.
