All,

I just rec’d a subscription offer of the Liguorian. Any opinions about the orthodoxy of the magazine?

Thanks! Juli

Liguorian is flawed, but imho is much much much
safer, theologically, than either US CATHOLIC or the ST. ANTHONY MESSENGER. And forget about NATIONAL CATHOLIC REPORTER.

Jaypeeto3 (aka Jaypeeto4)

I think it lacks much meat.

I love the National Catholic Register.👍

I
i like the REgister but it is a weekly newspaper, not a monthly. I disagree, Liguorian has plenty of meat, plus a short story in most issues, which are getting rarer in mass circ mags. The articles are long enough to really get into a discussion and presentation, not the USAToday type bytes that US Cath and most mags aimed at catechists settle for. Quite a welcome surprise compared to what has happened to what used to be good thoughtful mags like Commonweal and America. I don’t have a birdcage that needs lining so I don’t subscribe to either of those, haven’t for ages.

Well, I think it is a good thing to support Catholic publications, so I say try it for a year and decide for yourself. I definitely would consider it faithful to the Church.

It’s only $12 I think, so it can’t hurt. I already get the Catholic Register and the Wanderer. In addition, I get the Lay Witness from CUF and another similar publication that I can’t recall at the moment.

Thanks for all of the opinions!

My pastoral associate had given me some terrible weekly/monthly mags - the American Catholic I think (??). If I didn’t know better, I would have thought they were anti-Catholic writings. They were filled with a lot of dissent and criticism, which is something I didn’t want to support. The back page on one of them had a picture of a priest in sunglasses and handcuffs giving the peace sign.

The second name, in particular, is controversial. Please see a bit here:
…If you have followed Chittister over the years, you will know that such lines are emblematic of her approach to religion. I can’t remember her ever talking about the need to teach Christian doctrinal truths. To her the faith is reduced to petitioning and rallying, …

I was very disappointed, I thought the magazine was incredibly liberal. I just throw it out now. It’s that whole USCCB mentality.

I grew up with the Liguorian, for our family it was THE bathroom magazine! I really miss it in its short, compact Reader’s Digest style that it once was, and written on recycleable paper. I was no theologian in my young age, but I do remember the articles to be solidly Catholic. I guess about 10-15 years ago is when it “jumped the shark”.

One regular I remember in there was the ABC’s of faith. Do they still have that? They were great stories and poems for kids

I just checked their website, and a 10 issue subscription costs $18. I’d feel comfortable risking that sum, and probably will when my St. Anthony Messenger subscription expires.

fix:
Their website contains this:
Kathleen O. Chesto
Joan Chittister, OSB
M. Basil Pennington, O.C.S.O.
Fr. Ron Rolheiser, OMI
Its not real obvious from the website, but that list of authors seems to refer to books published by Liguorian Publications. I don’t know if those authors write for the magazine.

I have seen a few issues and have seen some other publications. Personally, I would avoid it.

I do not how but I started to receive it in a regular way. It has some interesting articles. Like everything else I take it with a grain of salt. I have not read anything that would make my jaw drop; however it does not satisfy my need for moral or scriptural information.

It is a bunch of wishy-washy feel-good dribble with no substance and sometimes barely in line with the Magisterium. But I don’t regret getting the subscription because I was happy to support the missions.

I agree with everyone else, but my favorite Catholic mag is The Rock, of course!

I loved that old small format. It was handy and readable, and I didn’t like it when they went to the full size magazine format.

It’s more theologically liberal than it used to be, but no more so than Catholic Digest, and a lot less so than St. Anthony Messenger. It’s not unorthodox. It’s designed as a family magazine, so it’s not going to be as “meaty” as the Homiletic and Pastoral Review, for example. There’s a good variety of articles, and some fiction, a bible quiz, a crossword puzzle.

They certainly seem to nuance certain things.

That’s true. I was tempted to write a letter in response to a recent article about the Gospel of Thomas, in which the author seemed to take for granted the existence of Q as a bonafide document. But overall it is still an orthodox publication.
