What exactly is it? I have never heard about limbo until recently but i don’t know exactly what it is. I want to understand what this is because I am talking about this with someone in another forum. It is vital for me to know what it is. She claims that she was brought up with the idea that Limbo is a place where you go for 40 days after you die to atone for your sins. I don’t know what to tell her since, I don’t know what it means, so I ask of you knowledgeable people in this forum to grace me with your knowledge of Limbo,

Thanks in advace

Limbo is not a Doctrine of the Catholic Church…that needs explaining first. It is a concept that was brought about when discussions about the topic of “unbaptised innocents” arose…I wish I can remember which Theologian…or maybe Doctor of the Church…sorry.

Due to the fact that an unbaptised person could not gain entry into Heaven…some wanted to tie that loose string and put them somewhere, and when anyone says Limbo most people think about babies who have passed prematurely before Baptism, but it might also include the unbaptised mentally impaired. It was not Heaven or Hell…

I don’t know too much about it because Limbo was never discussed with me during RCIA…the Church has rejected Limbo and taken the stance that in the case of unbaptised innocents, we must simply trust in the great Mercy of God.

It sounds to me as if she is confusing Limbo and purgatory…but there is no timeline for the purging of sin…it could be 2 min…could be 200yrs…It is as individual as the person who is being cleansed
