I know that in one of the gospels they trace Jesus liniage to king david through Joshep. But, wouldn’t Josheps liniage to King David be irrelevent scince Jesus and him were not blood related? Wouldn’t it only count if it were through Mary? Is Mary a Daughter of David (with a few greats and a grand in front)? How do we know? Thanks and God bless.

In the Jewish tradition of the day it was always through the father that a persons lineage was denoted. As can be seen through all the lineages in the old testament. Even when a mother is denoted it is usually done to show which line of decendents the author is intending to follow, as in the case of Bathsheba, which is given to show that the promise made to her was fulfilled.

It is also important to remember that in Jewish custom when a man married a woman with children, her children became lawful heirs of the new husband and fell into his lineage.

By showing the line of Joseph to David, and giving that Joseph was the husband of Mary. That prophesy is fulfilled concerning the Messiah coming from the seed of David.

It is highly possible that Mary was a decendant of David, but it is not what was important to the jews at the time. For since Joseph was the foster father of Jesus, if he had not been a decendant of David then neither would Jesus have been considered one even if Mary had been since the lineage was taken from the father as I stated above.

Well the liniage of a brother i-law or uncle in-law would become mine as well once they were married into my family. I might not have a blood relation but their family is now mine as well. PLus I though Mary had a liniage to someone, I can’t remember off the top of me head though.

Is Jesus from the line of David through Mary? If not through Mary then how can he be considered to be from David since Joseph was his foster father?

Both Mary and Joseph were of the house of David
drbo.org:
Isaias 7,13 And he said: Hear ye therefore, O house of David: Is it a small thing for you to be grievous to men, that you are grievous to my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel.
This prophesy states that the Christ will be concieved by a virgin of the house of David.
