Good Morning.

I noticed at my first mass that some of the prayers said were quotes from the scriptures. One that stuck in my mind was ‘‘Lord I am not worthy to receive you …’’ as I remembered reading that somewhere in the Bible.

Are there other links between scripture and the mass? Is there a link or a site I can go to to get more information.

I admit to being pretty much lost - but I want to try and understand the structure of the catholic mass better.

There’s a lot.

The sign of the cross comes from Ezekiel 9:4 and Revelation 7:4, 9:4. The words we say come from Matthew 28:19.

The greetings the priest uses come from the letters of St. Paul.

In the Penitential Rite, Form A (the Confiteor) contains allusions to Scripture, such as 1 John 1:9, James 5:16, Psalm 41:4, and Luke 15:18; Form B draws from Baruch 3:2 and Psalm 85:7 (or 85:8 depending on your bible); Form C ("…, Lord, have mercy") comes from Isaiah 61:1, Luke 4:18, Matt 9:13, and Romans 8:34.

The Gloria refers to loads of Scripture as well! Luke 2:14, Baruch 3:6, Psalm 145:2, Matthew 2:2, Hebrews 1:6, Revelation 4:11, 14:7, Psalm 86:12, Romans 11:36, 1 Cor 6:20, Phil 4:20, 2 Cor. 4:15, 1 Chr. 16:24, Rev. 4:8, Dan. 4:37, 2 Cor. 6:18, John 1:14, 18, Rev. 1:8, John 1:29; 1 Cor. 5:7; Rev. 5:6, John 1:14, 18; John 1:29; Matt. 9:27; John 14:13-14; Acts 7:59-60; Mark 16:19; Luke 22:69; Col. 3:1; Heb. 8:1; Rev. 15:4; Isa. 37:20; Ps. 83:18; Eph. 2:18; Phil. 2:11!

There’s plenty more. I’m working on a sort of compendium of this sort of thing.

8 But the centurion answered him, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard him, he marveled, and said to those who followed him, "Truly, I say to you, not even * in Israel have I found such faith. Calvary and the Mass, by Archbishop Fulton Sheen. It focuses on the different parts of the Mass and connects them with Jesus’ last words on the Cross.

You beat me to it. Ag_Not, you NEED to read this book if you’re truly interested in this question. It discusses everything from roman reports on the original christian worship (strikingly similar to the present day mass) and how the entire mass ties in to the bible, particularly in how revelations and the mass are so connected. Almost the entire mass is a scriptural enactment.

Actually, what you quoted comes from the Gospel according to St. Matthew:
And the centurion making answer, said: Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof: but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed. 9
What the original translation in Latin says is:
Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof, butr only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
This translation will take effect during on the First Sunday of Advent, 2010.

The Sanctus, which, in English is the Holy, Holy, Holy, is taken from both the Old Testament and the New. The first part comes from Isaiah:
Holy, holy, holy, the Lord God of hosts, all the earth is full of his glory. 4
The second part comes from the New Testament and is found in the Gospels. Here is what St. Matthew recorded in his account:
Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. 10
Of course, we don’t mention David’s name in the Sanctus, but, you get the idea.

And of course, the Pater Noster, the Our Father, comes directly out of the Bible, this time, taking a look at St. Luke’s Gospel:
Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. 3 Give us this day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation. 5
It’s a little shorter, but, I think you’ll get the general idea. Of course, here is the version that is more familiar to us. It is taken from St. Matthew’s Gospel:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our supersubstantial bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. Amen.
I hope this helps.
