I know about the Shriners Club being forbidden, but can anyone tell me about the Lions Club? Or for that matter, is there a list I can go to that will indicate which organizations are allowed for Catholics to participate in and those which we are to avoid?

Thanks for all your help.🙂

Rotary, Lions, Optimists, etc. are great organizations and as far as I know are 100% compatible with the Catholic Church.

What you need to watch out for are Masonic-related groups and also organizations or charities like the Salvation Army which are also ecclesial communities in their own right.

I am the president of our local Lions Club. I just discovered that the Lions Club supports planned parenthood. I now have a decision to make. We do good work, but I need to feel good about it.

It is truly heartbreaking to think that the organization that helped my mother for so many years supports an organization of thugs that murder pre-born babies:mad:

Andrew, can you please provide a site with this information?

There may be problems with the Lions Club as to its support of planned parenthood, I cannot say. But the Church has no prohibition against membership. It is not a masonic organization and does not have masonic roots.

I appreciate the information. I will talk to my spiritual advisor about it.

Thank you and God Bless

From this link:
Life Decisions International also gives a “Dishonorable Mention” to non-profits associated with Planned Parenthood or its agenda.
New groups in this section include Comic Relief, Eagles Clubs, Elks Clubs, Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Red Cross.
I don’t know were Life Decisions gets their information, but the bolded shouldn’t be on the list. Our programs help children grow up healthy and drug-free undertake projects that address unmet need, and by honoring the service and sacrifice of our veterans. We have NOTHING to do with Planned Parenthood and resent that the Elks is even listed.

I will also be contacting Lions Club parent group to ask if they are in anyway supporting them.

My e-mail to Life Decisions:
Were on Earth did you come up with the idea that the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is tied in with Planned Parenthood? As a Catholic, an officer of my local Elks Lodge, and a soon to be member of my Parish Knight of Columbus Council, i’m greatly offended to see the Elks on your list, you are greatly misinformed as to what the Elks do.
This link is were I discovered the Elks was on your “black list”: ewtnnews.com/catholic-news/US.php?id=3949
Did you know the current national President of the Elks is a Catholic and at the fall state convention of the Iowa Elks Association, a retired Priest celebrated Mass (that I attended) for those who are Catholic? Do you really think the Diocese of Des Moines would have allowed this if the Elks “supported” Planned Parenthood?
Thank you,

I am in Rotary - as far as I am aware we support no objectionable activities and there is nothing about it which is incompatible with Catholicism.

Follw up to my post from last night, it’s legit, the Elks are on the list because several Lodges have either made a donation to PPH or have let them have fundraisers at their Lodges.

Does anyone know about the Oddfellows? My grampa was an Oddfellow, and my gramma a Rebecca.

But I know nothing about them, are they Masonic related?

My understanding is that they are, but I will admit that my knowledge about the matter is less than thorough (one of the academic buildings on my college campus used to be one of their lodges, and I remember reading something about the group on one of the signs that mentioned Masonic ties.) But that is less than helpful, I’m sure.

There are a few different “groups” of Oddfellows - not all chapters have the same international leadership. It might depend on which group the chapter/lodge belongs to.

I found out recently that my grandfather is a Mason. Oddly enough, he and my grandmother are the only truly anti-Catholic people in my family. Or maybe that’s not odd at all. 🤷

Could you let us know which lodges? It is one thing to boycott a group because its overall policy is flawed, it is another if we boycott something only because it is easier to generalize than to be specific.
