Puzzleannie, which version of Wuthering Heights do you recommend? I haven’t found one that comes even close to the book.
none of them them are close to the book, but the Laurence Olivier version is an excellent movie, and at least captures the mood if not the plot line

Here are some of mine:

Good Bad & Ugly, High Plains Drifter
High School Musical
Back to the Future
Planet of the Apes
Chevy Chase Vacation
Jaws
Any Star Wars episode

I will stop and watch all or part of any of these movies if I happen to catch them while surfing.

How  can you list this one, without listing Pale Rider, right along with it? HPD=“the man from hell”; PR=“the man from heaven”. I bought the tapes of both on the same day! They are always played, one after the other.
It was late, okay? 😉 Pale Rider is also excellent.
Am I the only person alive who still loves silent movies???
You’re not alone! I love silents, especially the 1920s German Expressionists: Caligari, Nosferatu, Der Letzte Mann, Tartuffe, Metropolis. Have you watched Murnau’s Faust? It may be the best movie I’ve ever seen.

Mine is probably also a short list, but here goes:

The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari (I saw this silent film only once: when it was shown during a Palomar College film class. Really good).
The Phantom of the Opera (Herbert Lom version)
The Mummy and The Mummy Returns (w/Brendan Fraser sic] and Rachel Weize sic])
The War of the Worlds (1956(?) version)
Jason and the Argonauts
The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad
The Sound of Music
, and
My Fair Lady.

My list may be subject to addenda, so please bear with me. Thanks. :o

I’m seeing a lot of highly-critically-acclaimed movies on some of these lists… 😉
I agree, I think some people are not taking the thread title seriously. In any case, here is an eclectic mix, in no particular order, of movies I either own on DVD, or will almost always stop and watch when I flip past them with the remote, but trying to stick to “probably not best” (and maybe not even my “favorite” not-best, just the 30-ish that I came up with off the top of my head):

Bring It On
Legally Blonde
Miss Congeniality
Shanghai Noon
The Long Kiss Goodnight
Eraser
Demolition Man
Speed
Die Hard 1,2,3 (we’ll see about 4)
Kindergarten Kop
Charlie’s Angels
F/X
Father of the Bride (Spenser Tracy, Elizabeth Taylor)
Father’s Little Divided
Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House
Auntie Mame
The Trouble With Angels
Where Angels Go Trouble Follows
We’re No Angels
The Last Boy Scout
Beverly Hills Cop
Fright Night
In the Line of Fire
Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan
The Untouchables
The Postman

And one for my bride (I really should get her the DVD):

The American President

Bring It On Sooo many great lines: “Cheerleaders are dancers who have gone retarded.”

Shanghai Noon Great chemistry.

The Long Kiss Goodnight The most bad-a*s woman’s role since Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley.

Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House Love the scene with Myrna Loy trying to spec paint colors with the foreman. That has become code in our house when someone gets overly detailed. “Got it? Yep. Blue, green, white, yellow and red!”

The Postman Thanks for reminding me! I love this movie. IMHO one of the most underrated ever!

all are in random order except the first 2

Iron Will(way better than 8 below)
Hildago(best horse racing movie ever, always wanted to do endurance racing)
101 Dalmations
The Goonies
Polly(i think thats the name)
Monster Inc.
Fever Pitch
Sweet Home Alabama
Lion King

List 30 movies you love—movies you’ll watch pretty much whenever they’re on**—but** that are probably not on any “official” all-time best list. In other words, try not to list universally acknowledged classics; that’s another topic. So it likely won’t be your 30 all-time favorites, but I’m interested in the less well-known or less praised movies that people love. Here’s my list (can you tell I like Luc Besson movies :D). It’s light on older films because the one’s I like I think most people consider great. Feel free to critique my list before adding your own if you wish. 🙂

1984
2 Days In the Valley
All That Jazz
Born Yesterday
Brassed Off
The Commitments
Connie and Carla
Contact
Defending Your Life
The Fifth Element
Ghost Dog-The Way of the Samurai
Glengarry Glen Ross
Grosse Point Blank
Groundhog Day
Hamlet (2000 version)
The Ladykillers (2004 version)

Summer Rental
Twelve O’Clock High
You like 1984 and 12 O’clock high? Wow…I thought I was a loner on thos. Good choices!!!👍

Zooey- I redid this post to make it easier for you to reply if you wish to. 🙂
And (to the surprise of few who know me), anything with Bela Lugosi. Anything.
  • Have you seen Ed Wood? If so, what do you think of Martin Landau’s portrayal of Lugosi? I think he and the movie are terrific.
Are you sensing a pattern here??😃 Why deny it??🤷 I love scary movies. Really scary movies, I mean; not the blood & guts- bespattered dreck that passes for scary today. You can throw all the blood & body parts in the world about on the screen; if the story wouldn’t be scary on the pages of a book–without all that–It’s not going to be scary on film…
Do you like the recent Japanese horror films like Ju-on (The Grudge) and Honogurai mizu no soko kara (Dark Water)? They’re pretty creepy without being gory. *

I don’t watch many movies but here are some I like…

A Knight’s Tale
Sound of Music
My Fair Lady
Pillow Talk
The Glenn Miller Story (with June Allyson)
That Touch of Mink
Jane Eyre
An American Werewolf in London
The Illusionist
An Affair to Remember
Little Women
The Big Chill
Slingblade
Babe

I don’t think I could list 30 movies, let alone 30 movies not on anyones best list.

If I amy list one it might be:
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence

John Wayne - Tom Donahue
James Coburn - Liberty
Jimmy Stewart - The Lawyer who became Senator (I think) (Or “Pilgrim” as Tom calls him)

Great movie, seldom on.
