I guess if we’re all going to sin, struggling with the same ones is not any worse than struggling with new ones.

As long as we don’t become complacent. If I find myself confessing the same old sin(s), that tells me I need to double down on my efforts to overcome it/them.

What thoughtful and encouraging answers everyone! I’ve got a lot of good suggestions now as I get ready for a good confession before Divine Mercy Sunday.

HelenRose, I heard of someone apologizing to their priest for confessing “the same old sins” and the priest pointed out “Well what would you want? Some new sins?” I guess if we’re all going to sin, struggling with the same ones is not any worse than struggling with new ones.

Pope John Paul II is said to have confessed two to three times a week for up to an hour each time. Saint Bernadette while close to death confessed extremely small, at least what I would consider small, for example telling her mother she did not want to eat nasty onion soup, sins that she had committed as a child. I think the holier one becomes, the more need to confess smaller things as we try to cleanse our souls completely and purge the guilt that we feel.

I would say, look at the small things. Things you may have said or done that hurt another or caused scandal or bad feelings. I always confess temptations that I have because I realize that having such thought in more than a fleeting sense can weaken your resolve to sin no more.
